Mountain bike pedals

So, I need pedals for the bike I bought. Anyone have any laying around?

How much of a PITA are “clippless” pedals? I’m not fond of being locked to a bike.

Thoughs?

unless you’re a seasoned mountain biker, I would pass on clipless. They’re great for maneuvering tight corners (you can lift the bike by the pedals and swing the rear), but it’s difficult to bail in a hurry. Also, these are advanced techniques, so if you’re a newbie the benefits aren’t all there.

My advice would be to get some cheap regular pedals, get some experience and then upgrade once you feel like your chances of falling/needing to bail have gone down.

I’m wondering how hard it will be to hop this bike over things…

I have ridden 20" bikes my whole life except one time my parents bought me a 10-speed.
It jumped and wheeled fine, but it was a PITA on dirt and grass.

After riding my overly heavy 20" to work, I realized why I’m to old to ride that bike at a relevant pace.

What are your plans with it? Cruising to work and around town or actual mountain biking?

If you are doing a combination of both, you could always get a pedal which is a regular platform on one side and clip on the other.

Shimano PD-M647.

I run crankbros candy pedals. Lots of float and easy to clean in addition to being cheap.

Same. I love my pedals. You can get different versions that have a full pedal around the egg beater so you can still ride with normal shoes if you have to.

yeah, those are the Acids I think. Candy’s can be had for $25, acids are almost $75.

These are my downhill pedals, no DH bike currently in the quiver, but I have pedals in stock.

need to know your intentions…If you are gonna do any trails you should at least have a set set of al body pedals with pins for some traction.

as for clipless…shimano or time, absolutely not crank brothers. Shimano’s will work perfect for years with zero maintenance.

Unless there is something completly different about mountain bike clipless pedals, it takes about 3 seconds how to learn to clip in and out.

But that first time you panic it sucks… I rode for over a month raving about clipless, then one time i was riding a creek with a slate bottom jumped down a small waterfall hit moss, the bike slid out sideways and i totally forgot how to unclip… lol it was funny for everyone else i was riding with but not fun laying soaked in the water on my side…

No real plans.

Planning on riding around tonawanda eighths kids.

Someday I might actually get to play in the dirt.

Riding to work is also an idea. I only spent $300 on he bike so the thought of $75 for pedals is hard to swallow.

I like he aluminum ones with the pins posted above.

I need to work on wheelies and whatever else i can do to impress toddlers

Wait till you need a tire and you find out that a bike tire is the same price as a car tire. $60 for a Continental for my bike or for my car, WTF!!!

what he said ^

In the heat of the moment, an inexperienced mountain biker is gonna be chewing dirt with clipless pedals. And the benefits just won’t be there to risk getting hurt.

Dont forget that clipless pedals require special shoes too.

Just get some middle of the road pedals and call it a day.

I rode trails for a little while with regular pedals and couldn’t wait to get rid of them. I guess it depends on the type of riding you do. Sure I hit the ground a few times because of them, but that’s at low speed. I’d rather that then have my foot slip off of the pedal while cruising through trails and run into a tree because of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tumbled in the middle of the busiest intersection in Hamburg once and felt like a COMPLETE TARD in my team kit. What made it worse was as I was on the road on my side, still clipped in and everyone is asking “Are you ok?” After riding clip less so long I can’t even jump on a bike with flat pedals and pedal as I keep pulling my foot off as the crank rotates that one up.

So, where are the best priced shops around here?

Handlebars wants $30 for sunlite pedals

If I hada fixie, I could probably get a discount.

Just get them on the internet

pricepoint.com usually has parts on sale for cheap

$30 is pretty cheap for pedals. If you want cheaper I’d suggest trying Wal-Mart…
