MR2 Interior De-mod...

Normally when I work on an interior I replace the OEM headunit with an Alpine or JVC headunit. This time I removed the aftermarket unit and put back a OEM unit I got for a steal for $50. Looked a bit beat up but it was just REALLY dirty.

Here is the nice JVC unit in all of it’s glory.

When I pulled the center dash I noticed a few things were not up to snuff. The venting that you see located about the radio was not attached to the trim piece, fixed now. Also, The JVC unit does not use the same mounting holes for the brackets on the radio as the OEM one. A quick call to Toyota and 15 dollars later. All the original screws are back where they belong.

The 2nd previous owner was smart enough not to cut the factory harness. I have to rig back up the OEM wiring in the doors and rear quarters. The speakers appear to be non-existent and some aftermaket 6x9s are mounted in the intended stock Amp/Sub location. That too will change, shortly.

This OEM unit will be a temporary replacement until I can get a Toyota MP3 player for a decent price as long as I get a matching backlighting color. If not, out comes the soldering iron.

More to come…

That would be nice to upgrade to a modern OEM unit, I’m a big fan of taking old tech and updating it to todays standards.

Glad I’m not the only one that does something like that.

The poor fitment of aftermarket units drives me nutty, back lighting color is usually pretty easy to change. Or at least used to be.

The OEM radio definitely looks better IMO. Mike93 has a good idea there though as well!

I always strive for an OEM deck in my cars.

OEM Altima cd player in my old 240. It took a few hours to match all the wires up but def worth it.

(yes, I know. I never did get the third gauge before I sold it)

Those Radios look good guys. Just driving around with the Stock radio in it’s place gives the Car a whole new appeal to me.
