Private music tracker like What.cd, has significantly less torrents, but generally much more extremely rare lossless content as well as vinyl rips.

great for mounting the images downloaded from said torrent sites

I have used pretty much all media players. The orignal Music Match Jukebox (pre Yahoo) was the best IMO. I tried foobar and couldn’t figure that shit out. I use foobar however for extracting from .cue files. WinAmp was decent but it wouldn’t add all my music even after I tried manually adding the folder. I haven’t tried songbird yet I might give that a go. iTunes does have a lot of flaws (no watch folders) but I like the interface and how it will automatically download most album art, which is a huge “selling” point.

on linux it cannot handle album art or an ipod touch/iphone

What.cd you also have to maintain activity and a good ratio or you get the boot from what I hear. IIRC they do a lot of Lossless stuff.
