Will it allow me to update windows if it needs to be updated? Isn’t there usually a serial number I need that’s on my computer tower? I still didn’t pick up another hard drive yet, but having a slave drive for everything import is a good idea so I can reformat windows when it slows down? Anyone know if I should clean my registry?
The CD above is a Compaq XP Home Edition CD, it should be the one that would have been included with your computer. If it asks for a serial, it should be the one on your computer tower. As long as that key works, then you are good as gold.
For christ sakes.
Just put ubuntu linux on it and be done with it. It will run much faster and you can’t fuck it up.
Yeah we run Ghost for windows boxes and use disk utility and .dmg images for macs. It’s much easier with a standard build of course. Oh yeah…and never forget to strip admin rights after the rebuild. LOL
Still it’s pretty quick with especially Win 7 as it has the majority of drivers built right in.
As for it being a store bought, you probably have a recovery partition you can fire off with a key command that will wipe and restore. Don’t go playing around looking for the keystroke till you’ve backed up though.
I’m having a similar problem, but didnt think a new thread was necessary…
I have a Dell D830
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor; T9300 @ 2.50 GHz 2.50 GHz
4.00 GB of RAM on a 32-bit OS (Vista Business)
I deleted programs I dont use, hardly anything starts up at start up, my only issue is alot of my HD is taken up
It always seems to just run so slowly, though.
Im downloading CCleaner and malware bytes, to see if those can help at all, and I currently have Symantec Endpoint because my school requires it to use the network.
When I do ctrl alt dlt however, I have SO MANY Processes and shit going on, its redic.
It gets so bad sometimes my windows explorer will freeze trying to copy paste something…
help?
Um, no. I’m a computer nerd and I still find myself struggling with basic maintenance in Ubuntu. It’s fine for computer nerds, but someone who’s having trouble just disabling a few startup programs and uninstalling some bloatware would be hopelessly lost trying to do anything with Ubuntu.
Ubuntu has a kit car feel. Yeah, it looks ok but you’re always fighting to make things work right and searching for help only gets you a lot of posts by weirdos.
Use Ccleaner to disable startup programs…The more you have the more processes that run.
Yeah I disabled basically all of them except for my antivirus and ones I don’t know.
Which ones do I actually need?
Ones on the list according to CCleaner
Google update (I disabled tht)
Shockwave Update
Windows Defender
Apoint
Broadcom Wireless Manager UI
Dell Quickset
ECenter
KADxMain
PDVDDXSrv
SecureUpgrade
SunJavaUpdateSched
WavXMgr
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher
bncsaui.exe
SigmatelSysTrayApp
CCApp
nwiz
NVHotkey
Quicktime Task
iTunedHelper
HP Software Update (disabled)
LogitechQuickCamRibbon (disabled)
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (disabled)
Digital Line Detect.Ink
HP Digital Imaging monitor.Ink
Logitech Desktop Messenger.Ink(disabled)
Bluetooth Manager.Ink (disabled)
I ran CCleaner and my PC still runs the same…
I ran Malwarebytes and scanned my entire PC (took almost 1.5 hours)
Found one thing: Backdoor.bot in my Registry keys, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer{19127ad2-394b-70f5-c650-b97867baa1f7}
used Malwarebytes to quarantine and delete…
otherwise I think I’m clean. I also recently got one of those email virus things, like where emails were being sent from my email address to everyone for viagra ads. I just changed my password and deleted my contacts, and it fixed it.
I’m going to start to delete shit I don’t need, and I’m uploading pics to my photobucket account to keep free space on my PC. Music is also a killer… 30+GB
help please haha
You could post hijackthis logs and we could tell you what to remove…
You really don’t need any of those startup programs.
Newest versions of ubuntu have been mostly rock solid. How is it that you struggle with basic maintenance? It comes pre-installed with a majority of the crap most ppl need. firefox, empathy, openoffice, email client. Anything else can be easily installed with GUI tools built-in. Ubuntu Software Center is right in the main Applications menu.
There may be a few minor things that need to be tweaked/fixed, but I’ve found the documentation to be MOSTLY good.
I wouldn’t suggest it for most people…I don’t run it as my main PC at home either, but I hardly agree with your post. It’s actually a really nicely built OS in my opinion. If I could even get MS Office running on it natively, I would probably switch 100%.
The newer 10.0+ releases of Ubuntu are really nice, but definitely not as user stupid friendly as Windows. I’m still looking for a machine to put Ubuntu on…preferably an older one that still has a little life left in it. Ubuntu may load twice as fast but if your a gamer, a linux distro may not be your best bet.
What Bloatware? There is no bloatware. At all… Disabling startup programs is easier in Ubuntu then Windows… System -> Session Options -> Startup Tab. Compared to Windows: Start -> run -> msconfig. Or maybe Start -> All Programs -> Startup. Or maybe Start -> run -> regedit -> HKLM -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Run*… Yeah that is much easier…
i fail to see how it is easier to do in ubuntu when there are the same number of steps to get there in both…3
Without any experience how are you supposed to know they are in ANY of those locations???
XP – start, run, msconfig
7 — start, type msconfig
I looked up hijack this and couldnt find it on google… where do i get it?
Or That ^
well by that logic how would you know where to find it in ubuntu or hell how would you even know what ubuntu is??
