My sponsored 78 shovelhead build thread

the lack of body work has always seemed appealing as well.

My wife when she saw your Lotus at Fuji the one day we crossed paths: “Does his car really say FUCK across the side?”

I’d love to use it…

This just completely and utterly puts my ‘Lego’ bike thread to shame. Incredibly impressive work. I envy your skills and the tools you have at your disposal.

Since I’m still waiting on parts and it’s cold as shit out, I decided to draw some stuff in cad. My plan is ultimately to model the whole bike in cad. It’s so much easier for me to visualize stuff… and I think modelling is neat.

From simple to complex:
GSXR Rotor:

R1 radial Caliper (for the rear):

And lastly a 4 speed jockey top gearbox (you all know what that looks like)

I also designed a simple laminated steel mainshaft support… I’m not sure how that will work out, so I’ll go into more detail about that later…

I wish I had more time to model stuff. Looks good homie.

Dot.

How long does it take you to model all of these things?

Uh. Those three things took about 6 hours. The hardest part is figuring out a way to measure them.

solidworks or autocad?

nice to have access to that kind of software

Inventor

If you are really interested in getting accurate models and/or measurements you can get a microsoft kinect for a few hundred and use freeware to get stl’s. It took a couple hours to figure out the buggy software of 2-3 programs but it works pretty well:

I am trying to get a laser CMM to use on the motor. The results don’t seem that great from the Kinect to justify buying one.

Holy shit! That’s fucking awesome! I’m going to HAVE to look into this; I have some crazy complex parts that even with a CMM would be a nightmare to measure/model correctly… hmm who’s Kinect can I steal…

I didn’t know you oculd do that with a Kinect…HMMMMM

I just don’t see the dimensional accuracy being there. I mean, I suppose you could scan it and try to scale it so the overall dimensions are right, but I just don’t trust it…

If you find a place or end up picking up a Laser CMM, let me know some contact info and prices, I have a few parts I need scanned/modeled (Headlight parts for the Firebird… so I can model up/see what I have to do for Projector Units)

Front wheel showed up. I asked them not to drill it for a rotor mount, but they did anyway. Oh well, now I can add one someday if I want. The color is burnt magnesium. It’s brown in some lights and gold in others and greenish in others… it’s awesome. Will use it elsewhere on the bike for sure.

And I timed myself drawing this. 24 minutes.

what have u been using to measure?

Calipers, tape measure, square, level, plumb line, protractor
