National Geographic article from April of last year

Read my last post and absorb it.

Your idea has already been thought. Obviously didnt work.

The levies broke. That is clearly the problem with the disaster in NO.
The hurricane didnt even hit them!! The levies broke and flooded the city!

I’ve heard the levies were built to withstand 99.5% of the storms. So that’s almost to the point of designing to withstand a 1000-year storm (a storm that would occur once every 1000 years). That’s just an estimate, but you get the idea. Could they have been built better? Sure.

You can design things to whatever level you want, but things start to grow exponentially - required analysis, construction, and of course funding. If it was built that way years ago the response would have probably been, “Why the fuck did they build this thing so strong for something that will probably never happen?” Not saying that is the exact case here.

Same thing with nuclear plants and earthquakes. They collect the seismic data from locations across the country and you design to a set of standards for that given area. And someone has to decide what level to take those standards to based on statistical data. Based on those standards, if I get a stress ratio of 0.9, it passes. It’s damn close to 1.0 but it still passes. If I said let’s redesign it to get it down to 0.5 someone would have an aneurysm.

So what’s the right level? Do you use the “if it saves 1 life” argument? :dunno: I don’t have answers, just arguments.

Well said.
Pittspeed has made me hostile lately.

Led Zeppelin lyrics, songs and albums | LyricsFreak did you guys hear about this song? its this band that could predict the future. creepy they wrote about this back in the 70’s. someone should have known about this :kekegay:

:kekegay: wsj.com… apparently the mayor didn’t evacuate fast enuff. governer had to call him to give the order, president had to call the governer to give the order. once again prooving that while seperation between state and federal is a good thing, it has holes too… it gives this guy in NO & marian berry power. power to the people and brush your shoulders off holmie da press is comin

can be,darkstar wasnt around then!

I got pictures of that from an inside source of mine.

:eek3: :eek3:

the whole concept of the city below sea level is dumb, think about it from another perpective, what if someone blew up the levies. Same result minus a storm.

I watched some broadcast about how the rest was picked up by private investors who in turn, went and bought private jets etc instead of investing the $ into the restoration/reinforcing of the levvys. In which case, if that is in fact, true, some people are going to lose their shorts…I don’t know specifics so don’t ask, tried to google it and got nothin…media hype? who knows…that is just what I saw…

Bush is still an incompetent retard.

 50% of the national guard is overseas?

Shut the fuck up. We had this conversation already in another thread and thats not the case. Give it up already.

50% of the LA natl guard is deployed to the middle east. its a fact.

how in the fuck do you know?

that’s such a weak ass argument…

because its been all over the fucking news… :ugh:

i was off on the numbers though. 40% of Mississippi’s troops are in the middle east and 35% of Louisiana’s.

then it’s not 50% and 35% isn’t even close to 50%

someone had a theory and no one cared till now just like you so stop crying about iraq you hippie pussy

nostradarkstarmus

shouldnt you be out working on one of your non running cars or riding around looking like a squid on your busted ass dirtbike?

I’d totally throw down with you. Get some gloves and a ring. If I have to literally beat it into you that im not a pacifist, then so be it.

what does that have to do with a hurrricane…besides i can’t bush took my keys… shoulnt you be out getting drunk and ridindg around with naked guys in your car?
