So I signed up to join a friend’s chumpcar team for this spring at the glen and after taking a quick look at the cost of renting a suit I’ve decided to just buy one.
I’m looking for something that’s SFI 3.2A/5 (1 will work, but 5 is a smarter idea) and will fit me 5’10 31" waist. Anyone have something used or can recommend a good place to look for these?
I got a great suit from Driving Impressions after talking with the owner for a while. Great price on a suit made in the same factory and using the same materials that Momo and a few others use at a fraction of the cost. SFI rated and they were great about exchanging out my first suit which didn’t fit the way I wanted it to.
EDIT
Just checked the website, it was a “Team DI” branded suit, which doesn’t appear on the site anymore. But I’d suggest calling and talking with them directly. Or, come out to Bloomfield and try my suit on and see if you like it at all.
2010 Carl Edwards Multilayer NOMEX Pit Crew Firesuit Racing Suit SFI 3-2A/5 Rating
$275. I guess these are like 1000-1500 new and are way better than a cheap entry level suit. I also grabbed nomex socks, gloves, and a foam helmet ring and came out under $400 for everything.
I spoke with the owner of raceimage for a while, he went to RIT like me.
now we just need to build the car. It’s going to be either an early 80s 300zx non-turbo or 90s integra, both cars are already purchased.
I know that I have seen drivers at either Chump or LeMons wear two piece because I always think to myself “man that would be much more comfortable than dropping sleeves down and wedgie free when bending over”
But the verbiage in both sets of rules is terrible as it should spell it out and specifically say either “one or two piece is allowed” -or- “one piece only” -or- “two piece not allowed” .
Ask on the chump forum or email the regional director.
I’d build the teg first, it should be faster out of the box and my opinion an I4 is easier to wrench on than a V6. Parts availability, and tire sizes are slightly cheaper.
If you have a 300ZX guru on the team then go that route. From what little I know the engine bay is kinda rats nest of vacuum lines and wires. The 300ZX will be faster after it gets developed a few races.
yeah, the guy sells tons of these to chump and lemons guys… I should be more than fine until I get to a much higher level of racing which won’t be soon. My team has a dyno owner who owns a bunch of old Z cars and a repair shop guy who also rents race cars and knows the hondas well… I’m just going to let them fight over which car they want to build and focus on driving it.

quick question you might know the answer to… I have nomex lined piloti shoes, but I can’t find a FIA or other stamp on them. Are these good enough for chump / lemons like stuff?
No, typical gear tech inspection is SFI (or FIA) badge on suit, badge on gloves, badge on shoes, snell sticker in helmet, a glance over of socks (printed stamp usually washes/wears off), badge on neck brace.
A rare quick inspection you show them the helmet tech sticker from last race.
A long inspection they check the seems of gloves and suit (this has only happened to me at chump).
Yes, and the certified nomex stocks. (gloves are on in pic, shoes and stocks are not). Basically head to toe SFT/FIA certified with tags. SA helmet + HANS or similar or foam collar as shown.
