Need 400 grit, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit sandpaper. Highest Ive seen anywhere is 400 grit. Is there anywhere I can go to pick this stuff up by the weekend, or is it going to have to be special ordered?
If anybody’s lapped their HS before, let me know if its worth the effort to get this ridiculously fine sandpaper.
Any auto parts/paint, they sell multi-packs. In most cases unless you are going for extreme over clocking, or there is some issue with the surface the difference won’t be that huge in most cases.
lapping is pretty pointless now a days. most u’ll get out of lapping the cpu and heatsink is 2-3*C. for all the work u put into it, unless your trying to set/break any records, i’d just invest in a good cpu cooler instead w/ whatever the latest thermal paste is.
But if you are just bored and wanted to try lapping, emery paper works great.
yeah, I sort of agree unless the HS is really screwed up already, but who knows. I’ve seen some pretty impressive benchmark results from doing it too so who knows.
either way, like others said, a paint or automotive body store will carry it
So you’re lapping it to save a couple degrees on temperature…You will notice a difference as minute as that. Get a better heatsink I guess, Zalman are usually the best IMO. Look into liquid cooling, although it is expensive. Add another case fan.
Well i got a TRUE HS for the i7 940 (the best one specific to the i7) and some have said lapping it helped them get at best 5c. Its the fact that I might be able to get 5c that motivates me to do it. Ill just see how the bottom of the hs looks when it gets here. Im looking to get the i7 940 over 4.0ghz stable with some ocz freeze. I guess it shouldnt be an issue, lapped or not.
I had a zalman 9700 and it worked well with my q9650. I just didnt see an i7 specific zalman cooler yet.
Case fans arent the issue with an antec 1200 either. Should be set there.
5c is alot though when you plan on oc’ing. i’ve had my 8400(3.0) at 4.0 since i bought it. i just rock out the zalman. never had any issues. 4.2 was pushing it a little i was seeing into the 60’s and i’m not comfortable with that since my computer is forever on. the temperature vs performance was not worth it at that point.
