well i tried to post this on another forum with no luck, figured the Canadians over here would be better help
i have a 92 240sx hatch, with a sr20det black top ready to be dropped in
im debating on ditching the hicas and using the non-hicas pump that came with the sr. whats involved in removing the hicas? how can i install the non-hicas pump on the hicas car? what lines need to be blocked, what needs to be removed etc.
my sr came with a non hicas pump, i bought a sr hicas pump & bracket from a forum member. when i tried to swap out the pulley with an after market set i have, it turned into a nightmare (pulley set below) that pulley will not come off, i tried every kind of pulley puller, soaked in pb blaster for days, used acetylene, still won’t budge. is there something that i am missing here? i had a buddy come down, who has much more mechanical knowledge the me, to try and he had no luck either.
what i don’t understand is why the sr non hicas pump is held on with a 19mm nut, while the sr hicas pump is pressed on, does anyone know if the pulley in the pic will even fit the hicas pump? the p/s pulley’s are the ones on the top right of each set. it seems to me they will not fit the hicas pump, but i cant get the pulley off to see, the ka and sr hicas pumps look identical to me, besides the bolt in the back of the ka pump.
When I removed my hicas like 3 years ago I literally just disconnected the lines and that was the end of it. Car drove fine, tracked straight, took it as high as 240km/hr with no concerns. I remember people saying it would blow the pump but it ran fine and the rear didn’t steer at all.
It was so long ago dude I can’t exactly remember how I did it, all I remember is that I left everything in the car and picked up a regular power steering pump and then just zip tied the hicas lines under the hood.
I did a quick search on google and it looks like you can even remove part of the hicas rack that’s in the front to save some weight and make it cleaner. I couldn’t be bothered heh.
yea that’s what i would like to do. but to be honest i don’t have the first clue where to start, im looking into it now, im trying to find info on how it is setup, what parts it consists of and there purpose, so i know what to remove not having much luck tho, i have little mechanical knowledge towards cars, was always a motorcycle guy, just kind of learning as i go, im doing a complete build on my 240 hatch, i have a sr20 i am putting in and i just finished painting it, so its ready to go anytime, but i want to get this figured out first, i also have a full suspension set and a energy suspension polyurethane bushing set, so hopefully when i install them i’ll know
Just get a hicas delete bar and get rid of EVERYTHING. Pull out the rear rack, lines front to back, hicas module, and put in the non-hicas pump. You just have to keep the lines to the front rack, and block off one nipple on your reservoir. You’ll see everything I’m talking about when if you have the motor out. Just do it all while the motor’s out, keep the benefits of the rear hicas subframe and have the added bonus of less dead weight on your car. Good luck!
thanks for the help
is the hicas delete bar a must? cash is running low, is there another cheaper method. does anything else have to be removed? like the hicas solenoid? is there anything in the service manuals about hicas that i can’t find?
Don’t be lazy. Just rip everything out and change the subframe.
I did this in my drive way its not that bad. You can find a good sub frame for not much more than you will spend on a hicas lock bar.
If you have any questions you can pm me buts its pretty straight forward. Just tear out all the hydro lines running to the back leave the pump that came with your SR drop the hicas sub and put the non back in.
lol im farr from lazy, and good luck finding a 240 in my area. i’ve seen 3 running 240’s in the last 5 years, none in the junkyards at all. would be a good fix tho, i’ll keep an eye out.
what are the benefits of keeping the hicas subframe? i just read a post over on nico saying that hicas cars cannot be lowered with coilovers? that gotta be bs
yeah thats bs. I had the same coils on my hicas frame as i do now. The only difference is the rear toe links.
there is no benefit to hicas. I hated how it handled, I felt when the wheel when in a crack in the road or over a pot hole it would wiggle just sucked ass.
The only positive you have is that you have a hicas front rack keep that. Ditch the rest its just added weight.
