Well I finally got the Galaxie in a workable spot since I got some rear tires for it… I’m planning on dropping the oil pan and cleaning it out sometime this week. Then this weekend I figured I’d drop a battery in it and see if it would crank over… But I guess my question is… is it a good idea to put some oil down in the cylinder’s before cranking it? (it hasn’t been ran since 1973)… I figured I’d fill it up with oil until it has about 1/4 quart left to go in… and then use the last 1/4 quart split up in the cylinders? I’m just afraid that if I don’t do that, it’s going to have a dry start and possibly scrape up the cylinders being that the only thing that the cylinders have seen besides maybe some spiders and air would be the PB Blaster I shot down it every other week…
Is this something I should even be worried about?? I’m basically looking to see if the starter is still good and if it is, then I’ll be doing a tune up, few other things, throwing some gas in it and trying to fire it up this weekend  :eekdance:
I guess another concern is when trying to fire it up… I was just planning on throwing some gas down in the carb and giving it a whirl… Would it even be necessary to add the lead substitute when doing that since it won’t be a substantial amount of gas - nor running long?
Dump in some Marvel Mystery oil, it’s supposedly better for old cylinders. The PB you shot in there should free them up fine though. Remember to crank it with the coil disconnected first to get the pressure up, listen for anything untoward sounding before trying to fire it.
You shouldn’t need the lead additive if it’s running for a short period of time. I’d be anxious to see if the carb isn’t varnished over completely.
Yeah the PB Blaster that i shot in there was able to free the cylinders up perfectly fine. After a couple days of letting it sit I was able to crank it by hand with very little pressure on the wrench…
But with the Marvel Mystery oil, should I fill the car up with new oil minus the one quart for the Mystery oil, then put the last quart into the cylinders? Another question… is there anyway to find out the amount of oil the car needs? Its a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500xl 4.7L 289ci v8. I quickly browsed around on google and couldn’t find any amounts specified anywhere…
Or possibly I’d just add the quart to the 8 cylinders, let it sit and soak/drain down for a bit then start adding regular oil until the dipstick shows 3/4-full?
Dollars to donuts it’s five quarts. Your filter is the Rotunda R1-A part number C1AZ-6731-A superseded by the D9AZ-6731-A aka Motorcraft FL-1A.
any oil you put in the cylinders will NOT make it to the oil pan
5 quarts total go in the pan all at the same time, use MMO in the oil pan if you wish, fill it up to the full mark, no exceptions
