new comp purchase dilemma

So I’ve come to a dilemma. As a Christmas gift I’m suppose to be getting http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B2+Duo+Processor+-+Black/9556287.p?skuId=9556287&id=1218123846583#tabbed-customerreviews

But I seen this ad http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+Slimline+s5212y+Desktop%2C+18.5"+Monitor%2C+G60-535DX+Laptop%2C+110-1125NR+Netbook%2C+Wireless+Router+%26+Geek+Squad%26%23174+Setup/9999117800050002.p?id=pcmprd117900050002&skuId=9999117800050002&st=PC_Home_Makeover&lp=2&cp=1

and am confused on what to do. Currently my home computer is an old hp thats about 8-9 years old. So for $500 more I can get an all new desk top setup plus a net book. Downside would be I’d have to settle for a cheaper laptop which is what I really need. But I could also sell the net book pretty easily I’m sure and drop that $500 cost to I’d say at least $300. I don’t game on the computer, just surf and do school related work so having windows 7 and the new office would make doing HW alot easier. Opions on what route to go?

package deal looks really good for the price…I’m leaning towards the package deal depending on how bad you need or would use multiple computers.

I have the same laptop you posted first, and love it. No problems with the keyboard like one review mentioned. Battery life is fine for what I use it for. And windows 7 kicks ass, so far my favorite operating system.

As far as that package goes, all I can say is those netbooks in my opinion suck. Most if not all, don’t have a cd/drive which can make doing certain things alot more difficult. I just reformated one for a lady at work and couldn’t believe she spent $380 on the thing.

If you decide to go the custom desktop route, get ahold of me, I’ll beat any store desktop price, and most likely with better parts.
