the best thing to do is basically watch them. food for thought, if they cant jump on, then they cant jump off. thats how we try to monitor our dogs.
Ours is the same way. We don’t have a cat, but my mother in law has another mini dachshund that is 14 and he will play with Cooper but only for so long and then he is not interested and will growl at him, but Cooper never learns.
It took forever for Cooper to learn to use the steps. We tried to get him to go after treats and stuff but he would never do it. It was kind of nice because we didn’t have to use gates to keep him on the first floor, but then one day we just found him upstairs in the bedroom, so I guess he figured it out on his own.
We don’t really do anything at this point. He is still a puppy and in pretty good shape so we just jumps around all over the place. We put a chest at the end of our bed so that he just has a step down to that and then a step down to the ground, but he still jumps off of the couch all the time. With the 14 year old, he has trouble jumping, so he will come over to the couch and just kind of look at you and that is when you know he wants up. And then if he is on the couch and stands up and gets close to the edge we help him down. But sometimes he jumps on his own.
Edit: Oh yeah and the ramps don’t really work. My wife’s grandpap made a ramp for the 14 year old to use when he goes up the steps to the deck (like 2 steps) when he comes inside from going to the bathroom and he just goes right around it. He made a nice carpeted ramp so that the dog could just walk up it and the dog ignores it and jumps up the steps. I think dachshunds might just be too dumb
Okay, so scratch the ramp idea. He will be 3 next month, so his back is okay now, but I want to keep it that way.
We haven’t picked a new name for him yet. I actually had it narrowed down to Cooper or Harley the other day but I figured I would get made fun of for driving a Mini Cooper and naming the dog Cooper I just don’t know if I want to name him Harley. Dom liked the name Otto, but I just think auto when I say it.
On a separate note, he is testing our patience with his bathroom habits. He peed on the throw rug in front of our front door-probably because the cat lays on it and it had her scent…So I washed it, hopefully that’s the end of that. He keeps pooping in the house though. He’s done it two or three times right after he come back in from outside. I don’t get it. He pees outside yet he comes inside and poops
I picked the name Cooper for our dog because I wanted it to be somehow car related and I did Cooper because of the mini-cooper (don’t you guys have one of those?).
The potty issues are particularly difficult with dachshunds though. They tend to be pretty stubborn, but I must say it has been months since his last accident. At first, you just have to take him out every hour or so and just make him wait outside until he actually goes. I also did treats when he would go for the first few weeks and then after that we just did "good boy"s.
yea they are very stubborn when it comes to goin to the bathroom. luckily mine have become accustomed to going outside.
my one brown one is 4 yrs old and has back problems, 2 herniated(sp) discs in his back and 1 in his neck. caused from jumping, just because they are young doesnt mean they cant hurt themselves. try to monitor them when it comes to that.
Yes, we have a Mini Cooper S, so we aren’t going to name him Cooper lol. I think it’s a really cute name though. My sister suggested Lil’ Smokie but I think that’s too corny.
After hearing about your 4 year old with back problems, I think I will see about a ramp or stairs for the couch and bed. I might get a set of steps that Petco has and see how he does with those since they aren’t as expensive as the ramps I saw. Is it okay for them to go up and down stairs? He finally learned to walk down the stairs after going up them.
Also, anyone have any suggestions on how to get him used to the cats? He is so curious about them that he tries to chase them so he can sniff them and then they get mad and hiss and chase him away, which in turn scares the hell out of him. So, I’ve got to work on that and he’s also still pretty skiddish. If anything startles him, he tends to snap (at the cat or our other dog). He hasn’t actually bitten though I did have to break up a fight between the two dogs over a bone. Our other dog is possessive over toys and food.
