New Gaming/Media rig for my home office

Not sure if there is a gaming pc thread on here, but we should def start one. I’m pretty sure there are a few guys who tinker with them.

Lately I have been getting more into my gaming/media setup at home and decided to dive head first into it. I bought the Lenovo server, dropped a couple HD’s in it, got my shows/games on there and used it for a while until the OS took a crap and then I decided I was going to use Windows going forward. @JayS will get a kick out of that since he told me to use Windows from the start. lol

Anyways, I started looking at new systems and realized that a used one was probably better for me at the moment. I wanted to spend less money and play around with things. If I break it, it’s only that much less I would have spent on it.

I found this setup and immediately snatched it.

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (w/ Stock Heat-sink, has never been overclocked)
Asus P8Z68-V PRO ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (Dual Channel, 8 CAS)
Plextor PX-M2 Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (For Operating System and VIP Apps)
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Video Card
Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced ATX Full Tower Case
Corsair Professional 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer
Microsoft Windows 7 Pro SP1 (64-bit)- was running Win 10 Preview edition, but rolled back until release @ end of this month.

I soon after upgraded a few pieces:

Replaced my current 3 oddball monitors with matching 23" AOC IPS LED screens
Also grabbed a like new 3 monitor stand off CL from a small computer shop by UB
Logitech G700s rechargable/wireless gaming mouse
Razer BlackWidow Mechanical keyboard
Razer Tatarus Gamepad
I upgraded one of the fans to a 120mm with red led with 3 speed switch
I added my 4 TB HD into this as well, so I’m pretty much stocked on storage for a while

I have a 4k 65" TV in the living room I ran a 25’ HDMI cable to so that I can play The Witcher 3 on and I must say, it’s pretty awesome. Same with Batman, when it works. :fu:

I prefer the 3 screen most times for racing, Farm Simulator 15 and a few others, but being able to actually use 4k is pretty sweet. Up until now it’s either been 1080p downscaled or use Netflix/Youtube to actually watch 4k native stuff.

Anyways here’s my current setup:

My future purchases will include:

G27 wheel and chair setup
Possibly moving up to 1 or 2 980 cards, but my 970 seems to handle just fine for now.

Feel free to share your current setups. This is all still fairly new to me, so I like to see what everyone else runs, what works/doesn’t work, etc…

Nice setup.

I was all excited when I got this the other day

If anyone sees some good deals too post them up i will be in the market soon here

I was just letting this whole thing go but you had to go and edit the thread and tag me.

I don’t doubt that this would make a great server for someone who has the background of administering *nix servers and networking them with various other platforms, but for someone who just wants a home theater server setup to work and has been using windows PC’s and networking all their lives Windows is just SOOOO much easier.

cute as a button

I’ve been known to be hard headed and that was one of them. I just didn’t want to buy windows just to throw on that tower, but this came with Win10 on it. I loved it until one of my driver updates wasn’t 10 compatible and it fubar’d my boot files. Had to reformat the SSD and do a clean install of 7.1. They won’t accept anymore Preview edition downloads, but I wouldn’t grab it again even if they did. It had a lot of new great features, especially streaming my xbox one back to my pc to play there. It was just way too buggy for me though.

I was all excited for the Prime day deals and that was a huge let down. I planned to grab 3 monitors that day and the ones that were of any decent quality sold in a split second. Plus the fact that you could only buy 1 per account was annoying. I ended up going through Best Buy. They matched the price and shipped it for about the same as what I would have gotten through Prime.

What do you play on it?

Im debating building something for a primary desktop but am leaning towards an iMac

Lately I have been getting into The Witcher 3. So far I’ve played the new Batman, Farm Simulator 15 and I grabbed Cities Skylines for my gf to play around with. FS15 with mods/maps is pretty awesome. Once I can stream my XBONE back to the PC, I’ll most likely use it for Halo and Forza.

Once I get the G27, which can be had for $200 w/ shifter and 3 pedal setup…I’ll get Project Cars and Assetto Corsa. I think that’s what I’m mostly looking forward to.

I really wanted to grab the new Thrustmaster wheel, but I know I’ll end up maxing that out and spend the $1k on it. I’d rather spend the $200 on the G27, do the load cell upgrade and be happy.

My family is probably planning a Witcher 3 intervention for me right now. Once I finish that game I’m going to need to take a break from gaming for a while.

I think I’m like 1.5 hour into it, so I can’t fully comment yet. It’s alot to take in at first, so I’m still trying to learn it all. Graphics are 10/10 so far though. I had my headphones on it was super windy while I was riding and it was awesome.

Awesome dude! I’m not a gamer in any sense of the word but I have been itching to buy a wheel/chair set up for Dirt and WRC.

Nice setup too that stand is from easymountlcd, they make good stands for a great price compared to say Ergotron.

Hahaha, yeah, someone like ^ that huge *nix nerd would be perfect for this. He’s who I call when ever I have to do something on my Ubuntu box and get tired of searching.

I thought it was pretty cool we setup a RAID 5 with 256GB SSD Drives the other day for my GIS Guy at work.

Came out pretty neat, it is a high end Dell Precision workstation. 32gb ram I think.

Work toys are fun… 1.6 TB enterprise ssd’s… expensive as shit though.

Pffft…I’m looking at hyperconverged systems now to run a Hyper-V environment. (24) 1.9TB drives.

Vblock?

The above is 240 1.6 TB ssd’s which are using Raid 5. This is a dedicated array though.
