you know the deal Paul, define safe and one guy goes nuts robbing people with fear, and other guy is looking the other way who doesn’t care… society is flawed and it’s impossible to put in black and white, and the gentleman’s honor of a gray area is gone.
I undestand what you are saying i really do, but there are too many inspection techs who dont give a rats ass about the car and will throw a sticker on anything that passes the OBD II test…but then there are other places who try to nail people for shit they dont need and are not inspection items or just complete utter BS because they know they can make money of off people
So if you have one cop who doesn’t really do his job should we just abolish laws too? For every inspection station where a tech is doing a shitty job there are 10 more getting dangerous cars off the road. And eventually people like Pauly will catch up with the shop you’re going to.
The better question is why you’d continue going there? Even though I do almost all my own work and do my own pre-inspection before getting my state inspection I like knowing that a certified shop looked over my vehicles in case I missed something. And I usually quiz them when picking the car up about the amount of pad material left on the brake pads to make sure they actually checked.
The overriding point here guys is that NJ is so broke that they have to find ways like this to cut back regardless of consequence. NY isn’t in much better shape…
funny u should say that because I dont go to the same shop…i have gone to a different shop every year for the past 3 years with my car and my wifes…so thats 6 shops…all have done the same thing for the most part…the most intense thing they did was check my car to see if there was a cat and pulled 1 tire to check my front brakes…i will give u that 3 of these were Lube places…and the other 3 were small lil mom and pop places…the last time I went to a big chain they tried telling me I needed tie rods when i just replaced them the week before and got pissed when i called them out on it
seeing as how regularly inspect my own car multiple times a year when i simply swap out snows for summers and do all my own maintenance on both the wifes and mine…i find yearly inspections a pain and a waste…
I will give you that the majority of the population doesnt know what to look for and how to keep a car properly maintained and maybe NYSI keeps down on some uber unsafe cars on the road but there are still plenty of unsafe cars in NY that in all actuality shouldnt be on the road…
and to add to Onyx point witht eh financial state of the the state lol…do do they cost the state or help it…that I dunno…ours arnt free but I dont know how much goes to the state
NY makes money off our inspection system, how they spend (read: WASTE) the money is up to them, but it generates revenue, charge by the minute to dial into the system for every inspection, RAPE you on equipment, and unless you know someone you’re always going to be wrong since you’re a repair facility most days. i don’t see them changing the system in any way unless it benefits them financially in some way unfortunately. wish it wasn’t true. NJ’s system was very backwards and was a money pit, it was like going to the DMV, so I’m surprised it all went away vs. being changed into a way to generate instead of being an expense.
