New Ride

General G got a new name and a new ride.

T Type is gone…Replaced with a 87 Porsche 944.

I put 50 miles on it today.

Nice handling, but a little underpowered.

They make an LS1 swap kit for it :x: :x: :x:

cool…

You need a LS1 swap for that thing.

Please note what he said:finger:

Nice car. Shoulda bought a Conquest.

ls1 swap would be sick

Sounds like a fun project! That’ll probably make the die hard Porsche fans cringe. I’ll have to tell my neighbor about it and see what he thinks - he has a daily driver and one that he races at Beaver Run.

what’s that swap do to the weight balance?

From the manufacturer of the kit:

If you were to take a 944 turbo, and remove the Porsche engine and all the supporting systems like the intercooler and oil cooler, then install a stock LS-1 with AC, power steering, the works, your weight bias from front to rear would stays within 1% of stock.

Some photos of LS1’s in 944s

ls1’s are really light… prob wont mess it up too too bad.

nice

looks pretty clean :bigthumb:

Looks cool. I would get some porsche turbo wheels for it though. Or some porsche boxter wheels like sonny has. Will make it look more aggressive.

Nice car barry.

my cousin shouldve got the turbo

that’s what i was thinking. i figured an older motor like the 944 would be heavy enough that a swap like this wouldn’t be a big big difference  so jealous

yep nice car…

same thign applies to ls1 swapped rx7’s…those rotary twin turbos are about same weight as an LS1.

wouldnt surprise me that the porsche motor would be about the same as the ls1.

looks like a tight swap tho…

is it a turbo? what are all the things that gone wrong or are weak in these cars? always thought about picking one up.

That’s a non-turbo. 944’s are great cars, but you have to be really careful buying them. Stay away from the cheap deals unless you have someone who really knows what they’re looking at inspect it for you.

They’ve come down to the price range now where a lot of people buy them for cheap thinking “wow, I got a Porsche for $3000” only to realize how expensive parts/ labor are on them the first time they take it in for a timing belt change or new clutch. Consequently a lot of these cars have been driven into the ground by people who can’t afford to maintain them properly.

I can’t tell you how many I saw one of these come into the shop where I used to work with a huge list of problems that needed to be fixed. When faced with the estimate, the owners always said, “that’s more than I paid for the car” and walked out the door.

If you really want one, buy a really nice example that has all the maintainance records, especially timing/ balance shaft belts, and have a pre- purchase inspection performed by a tech that knows these cars. Clutch jobs are very expensive too, and they are difficult if not impossible to do without a lift.

I really like the 944 Turbos (951’s), and is what I would buy if looking for one (because the NA cars are just too slow for the $, and difficult to squeeze much extra power out of without expensive engine work).

Expect to pay at least 10,000 for a decent turbo that has been well cared for. Mods are easy to come by, but again nothing is cheap. The turbos can really haul with a few upgrades.
