NEW: The lastest stupid cheap coilover

First it was D2’s… then it was Megans… then all this other bullshit… Godspeed, Form & Function etc. etc.

But i think we may have finally reached the bottom of the totem pole because i dont think coilovers can get much cheaper than this.

Introducing, MDU (Master Damper Unit)…

Yes, genuises came up with that name…

You will find these creeping up on EBAY for $600 + shipping… they end up being about $650 after shipping but then there is the dreaded customs… so Canadian could expect to pay $850+ (CDN$) if ordering from the US…

i can offer them for $700 picked up and $750 shipped.

Yes, that is $750 or less for a brand new set of coilovers.

Features:

  • helper springs (front and rear)

  • adjustable dampening

  • adjustable front camber
    Key points:

  • Height is NOT adjustable by adjusting the lower bracket. The lower bracket is fixed, therefore height is adjustable only by lowering the spring.

  • The pistons are 20mm front and 12.6mm rear (measured with my mic beside a set of Megans, the piston diameters are the same on the Megans and the MDU)

  • although the coilovers do not have full dust boots, they do have bump stops which the D2’s did not. These have bumpstops on all 4 corners. Megans are rear only.

  • The d2’s were stupid in that the bottom of the studs in the top plates actually point loaded on the spring. These have the proper collars and rubber seats to reduce noise and spring pivot.
These are actual pictures, the first set will be worn on Hectors S13 from Mild2Wild Customs, he’ll be at the Niagara meet. I will have one other set on display at the meet.

These coilovers are available for S13/S14 and 350z. They are available for R32 (non GTR) but only the previous generation that had issues with the piston seals.

these coilovers come with a 1 year warranty. In order to make use of the warranty the damper must be returned to the original importer in California for rebuild. I have asked that if we do a decent volume if i can stock the dampers, i dont see that happening in the short term.

If you have questions like:

“what is the bushing, rubber or urethane?”

or

“do you have a shock dyno”

i will not take these seriously because if you cared at all about those things you wouldnt be considering a $600 coilover.

These are strictly for budget builds and not for any sort of competitve track / drift car.

SPRING RATE: i have not been told what the spring rate is. i have inquired and am waiting to be advised. These are not a very hard spring rate though. If you want stiff you should be getting stiffer springs. the spec of the spring is the same as most other aftermarket coilover springs so you can upgrade at any hot rod shop.

spring rates:

S13: F4.7/R3.8
S14: F4.5/R3.8

For those wondering, the spring rates are so low because the height is adjustable by adding preload.

I’m assuming that this company is assuming people will want to lower it a CONSIDERABLE amount, which would probably bring the spring rates closer to what other coilovers like stance etc to approx 8/6 to 9/7 with the much added preload.

Not bad… Tried searching for a bit more info and came across this

Springs are 8’s All the way around
16 Way Damper adjustable
2.5 inch height adjustable

http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=303392&postid=3316005

So apparently they do have different spring rates or he found springs else where etc but defiantly interesting considering buying new shocks/struts, springs and top mounts could easily total into the $600 area.

You bet…the shocks/springs you got from me cost me around $1000.

For anyone on a budget who wants new parts (not rusted/blown garbage)that will be perfect for the street, get these.

The spring rates are not 8’s on his coilovers, he just doesnt know and it making it up.

Pretty sure when you add preload the ride height will go up, not down.

The threaded part for adjusting the collars looks really short.

I laughed.

yeah, i have no illusions about what purpose these coilovers serve.

they are not going to be on par with Megan, and certianly not STANCE.

However, i have faith in how low some of your standards are when building a cheap turbo car. Many people are not willing or able to spend $1000 + on a decent set of new coilovers… and often times, buying used JDM coilovers results in lots of badness.

i get inquiries every week about people asking where to get their used JDM Kei office or Cusco coilovers rebuilt because they bought them for $500 and thought they would last 2 years… sorry friends… them shits is already 8 years old.

The more preload you add, the shorter the spring becomes because you are essentially compressing it, making it more stiffer, also making the car lower.

PS: I hope none of you thought that I was comparing these with Stance coils. I was just referring to the SPRING RATES that most common coilovers have, such as stance…

“Moving the spring perch upwards (preloading) raises the ride height, moving the spring perch down lowers the ride height.”

http://www.splparts.com/doc/SPLCoilover/default.htm

adding preload increases height

fo sho

You’re right, for some reason I was thinking differently.

When I preloaded my coils I also adjusted the height at the same time to keep things constant. I forgot I did that process.

If you adjust preload it changes height since your essentially making the shock body longer/shorter.

If you adjust height, you can keep preload constant if you move the bottom collars only and just twist the top collars which will move the shock body.

I don’t know what I was thinking…too much FT work for me.

not much of a price difference from ebay its 630 shipped to you.

not tryna mess you up or anything

You must be stupid?

He wrote in his first post that you have to pay for customs, which is bound to be 13% of the price you paid, PLUS, they probably ship with UPS which means another BS tax (brokerage) of the same amount.

Plus customs. Edit, matt got to it first.

Seems like a great idea for the guys who want the bling of coilovers without the pricetag.

fixed.

customs on this will rape you… ask guys who ship Stance over the border… you will have a hard time sneaking a 80lb box through customs.

there is no one on here who has $$$ into their cars that hasnt been raped by customs on more than one occassion. why gamble?

are these steel or aluminum?

true i forgot all about customs

Anyone using these should pipe up here
