Well today I got the news I’ve been waiting a few days for… I ended up getting an internship offer with KPMG. I’ve had 2 other ones with Deloitte and E&Y, but this one was what I had my heart set on and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be going ahead with it. I have plenty of time to decide.
So, to cut to the chase, I have the option of staying in the NYU dorms for 8 weeks, which I know will be a party-riffic time. The internship goes from June 12-August 4. I was wondering what you guys thought about paying about 800 bucks a month to chill in the dorms, or if you had any other viable options such as subletting for the 2 month period. Maybe one of you guys are baller enough to have a spare room and wouldn’t mind a computer geek staying with you, with rent and such as obvious payments. Any comments or ideas would be appreciated
Working in the Metro section of Audit. First week will be training in Orlando (haha training at Universal Studios) and then whatever client they throw me on. Its obviously not going to be a major client seeing as they want me to be exposed to the process from the beginning to the end, or as close as possible. So anything huge like Revlon won’t be in my future. Probably a company like Footlocker. I don’t think I’ll be getting much Starbucks for anyone, besides myself… Since that is a business expense that can and will be reimbursed.
E&Y is an amazing company, but the people I interviewed with had problems with their egos. They were all cocky mofo’s. If thats how most of them are, then I don’t think a summer with them is best for me. Deloitte is amazing as far as internal audit is concerned, but thats about all they are known for. Their RA sector isn’t that great, and from talking with them a few times it seems like once you are hired (assuming I get a fulltime offer) I’ll be stuck in the IA practice. I have few problems wiht that, but it may grow tiresome. And then there is KPMG, which is the company I had as least likely on my list until last week when they flew me out to the cty for 2 days to meet the firm and just hangout for the mot part. The people are amazing, the work seems fair, the “benefits” assuming a fulltime offer are competitive, and they have a real focus on maintaining a balance between life inside and outside the office. They also have you on a rotation through practices and clients if you desire a work environment of that sort. So, in order of where I stand right now its KPMG, Deloitte then E&Y. I have to burn 2 bridges by the end of the month, and it kind of sucks because I’m assuming I get an offer at the end of it. I hate making decisions
its one of the big four… so be ready for the best and worst jobs… also being a consultant, well an intern, get ready for crazy hours :)and i would think your clients
Dude, be prepared to work your ASS off for crap pay. My good friend works for Deloitte, and works over 60 hours a week. Burn out is pretty high at the big 4 and it’s all over the company. She tells me that a lot of the employees get stretched to the max without recognition and pay. I interviewed with EY and they tried to shaft me on the salary, especially in IT. After I noticed how it was like, especially the environement, I promptly accepted a job at a non profit and I’m 100% glad I did. Don’t get me wrong, if you enjoy being working in a environment like you described, then go for it. Congrats on landing a big 4 internship. It’s one step in the door.
Yeah, the pay really isn’t a huge issue for me. Actually, its quite a bit (at least to me) for the summer, so I’m not going to complain on that end. I wanted an internship to help me decide IA and RA because I am going both routes at UB. Note, thats internship pay, so I know I won’t be working AS much as a first year but the pay will most likely be comparable. Having a Big 4 firm to throw on my resume will help in the recruiting season next semester, so thats really the highlight of this whole deal for me: To get my foot in the door at one firm, but more importantly get myself a step ahead of other applicants.
As for working on a client, I haven’t heard anything in regards to confidentiality in regards to who I will be working with. Every firm I have spoken to has had their employees speak in the open about their clients and work done and even thrown numbers in there, so I don’t think its a big issue at the moment.
Now, to mention somehting I forgot in regards to housing accomodations. The internship I’m looking at currently is only 8 weeks long, as opposed to the D&T and E&Y which sit at 10 weeks. If I have my own housing, therefore sublet, I can extend the internship period another 1-3 weeks depending on the workload they have for me. This is why finding a place would be better for me, since it would be more exposure within the practice. Its times like these I wish I had some great aunt’s cousin’s nephew’s brother-in-law’s second neice to stay with, haha.
