Job offer negotiations?

How are you supposed to negotiate a job offer?

Moog has yet to get back to me, and I have received an offer from another company. I would rather work @ company #2, but I think Moog would pay much better, so I am trying to get a hold of the HR ladies and press the issue.

The biggest mistake I made in my career was in negotiating my salary for my current job. I totally screwed myself starting for $12/hr with a BT degree. It has taken me years to get to where I should have started.

Anyway… the new offer is fair, but it would only be a ~6% raise in pay.

How do you negotiate in a manor that is not offensive?
The R&D manager said a few times that the salary was negotiable over the phone when he gave me the verbal offer.

Any input would be appreicated…

Is this whiny and petty enough for NYSpeed?

“Can I please please pleeeaaase have more money?!”

Works every time. :snky:

you tell then that in order for you to make the move you need to have at least a X% increase in salary, because of more responsibility or something

I negotiate job offers with people all the time, it usually takes me 2 weeks to get the final salary, but its also for much higher paying positions.

worked pretty well for a friend that was offered 35 at job X. He told them Job Y was offering 44 which was a legit offer, they matched it.

umm call and say

I have a job offer at place B offering me more $$$

I would much rather work for you moog (lie) can you beat their offer?

You don’t want to say that you would rather work at moog, that shows that you are not committed to the company.

How do you know I don’t have a high salary…
Never mind, I mentioned the B.T. degree

I’m trying to figure out what that X percentage really is…
It also has to be realistic for a Technical Associate II position
I could not get anyone to give me any sort of range that they have budgeted for :frowning:

I could quote Fry, but they would probably withdraw the offer

I’m talking about mid 6 figure salaries, and yes those jobs do exist in Buffalo

First, titles mean nothing. I work as a consultant and contractor and companies have 1000’s of vice presidents, managers, directors, and every other title they can give someone to make them feel special. Also, when you go to another company, your title might sound cool but they don’t give a shit.

Second, when you are interviewing, HR knows the upper and lower bounds of their position. They wont tell you that they budgeted it up to 50k and offer you 40 because no one will take 40.

Third, its perfectly fine to ask for higher salary. Make sure you do your research. Know what your lifestyle warrants for bills and typical spending and do the math. Also research the company and look online for similar job postings for the same type of work elsewhere. DO SERIOUS RESEARCH. You will find upper and lower positions online so make sure you are getting the right info. If you are looking at a entry level position, make sure you research the entry level positions. Go in, if they are offering you a position, they already want you and have selected you so now you can begin to negotiate. A full time job is a little different than going into Taco Bell and saying you want 8.75 an hour instead of 7.75.

If typical postings for a job are around 40 and they offered you 30, speak up and ask for 40. If they can not pay you that much or it might cross paths with other employees who have been there a while and only paying them say 35, they will tell you that the most they can pay you is 35. At that point you can choose to take it or not. Its only rude or will get you looked at bad if they offer you say 30 and you ask for something like 50 for a basic entry level job.

i love negotiating. go read a few books at borders if your not up to speed.

what the hell is a BT degree?

you need to know the following when negotiating salary:

what are you worth to the employer?
what are they paying people like you in your job in the industry/also consider your location?
how bad do they need you?
Do you bring anything to the table that someone else cant?
how long can you hold out?

based on that info you can negotiate successfully.

Also, in your current situation. I would call up moog and ask them if there is anything you can do to expedite the process. Did they fill the position? or can you get a status update… you can also call to see if they need anything else from you if your looking for a way through the gatekeeper.

edit:

a side story… i had all of the above answers in my back pocket… i was interviewed, then flown across the country to interview again. told them to pay me 220k and sat and waited for them to call me back and to only offer 160k. i told them to take a hike, gracefully of course. you have to be ready to negotiate. you need to be prepared to “hey we will only pay you this” and be able to live with that. if you are right out of school, stop playing games and get some experience. take a job that has job security and good benefits. stop complaining about 10k in salary.

put very simply… if you can explain why they should pay you $x more and you’re in a position where you can walk away - then explain it up and ask for more.

if you’re not, then don’t if you 100% need the job.

I just went through this…I really want the job I just took but I wanted relocation money and a few other things…

Just talk to them and explain your reasoning for what you want…and how you will be a value to the company.

Everything is ALWAYS negotiable. They will ALWAYS give you their lowest offer.

I’ll expand later, I’ve done quite a bit of this and helped several people in the past.

I just went through this as well with Siemens. I received a verbal offer over the phone. It was what I was looking for anyways and I wasn’t about to complain since its about a 35% increase in pay as opposed to what I’m making now. Now that I think about I should have shot for a little more. G/L

Any new thoughts?

They get an A for presentation…
The offer came in a quality embossed leather folder with a notepad.

Moog said it will take weeks for them to make a decision, so I would be a fool not to proceed.

Look at the offer they gave you. Do research in the field to see what your upper and lower is personally to live and what the field pays and go from there.

How would we go about negotiating one of those jobs for me? What field is this in?

Heck, I’ll even stay in Buffalo for a job like that.

Insurance and health care

Counter, counter offer accepted

I’m pretty sure my present employer will be pissed :frowning:
I’m 33% of the engineering staff and the corporate mother ship
does not replace employees. (not in the last 3 years at lesast)

BTW, we work very closely with Moog and they get some SICK overtime. Lots of $$$ to be made

edit: congrats on the job
