Nikon D40?

I just purchased a D5000 from ebay with a whole host of things that come with it. It comes with regular AF lenses.

Question is, should I upgrade to a VR lens?

D5000 is a waste of money IMO. For a bit more cash you could have had the D90, which is a phenomenal camera, anyway what do you plan on doing with it ???

eh, it’s almost the same camera without the auto focus in the body all for about $250 less. I certainly don’t see that as being a waste. My fiance is highly into photography (the film type) and this will be her first DSLR camera. She and I will be taking landscape shots and more candid shots of people and pets, but would like the capability to do all types like action and closeup.

Hmmm well what kind of lens’s did it come with ??? It really depends how hard she is into it and what kind of performance she is going to expect. I have used cheap kit style AF lens’s and honestly, although there cheap, light weight, and offer a great zoom range, the lack of focusing speed, aperture, and image quality are too frustrating in too many situations for me to consider having them in my bag. Its all going to depend on her expectations and usage. My suggestion though, and granted you may feel this is overkill, either way hear me out. Get one “good” lens, Ex. The 70-200 2.8, other than a slightly smaller zoom range than you’ll get from other AF zoom’s, there are very few situations in which it will let you down. Its got super fast focusing speed, sharp image quality, and supports F 2.8 for low light situations. Macro, sports, portrait, candid ext I have done it all with is lens and have found that I could honestly have kept it as the sole lens in my bag. There is no lens swapping and no frustration over what each lens in capable of, not to mention by the time you get done getting a cheaper lens to cover all your basis (if you didn’t already) your getting up there in price. (sigmas 70-200 retails at about 800) Just my .02 though. GL

The one I initially wanted was the normal Nikon 55-200 lens. I am thinking of upgrading to the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Zoom Normal-Telephoto Autofocus Lens that has the VR in it. Just wanted to make sure the VR was worth it initially but after researching it, it seems to be the way to go.

What are your thoughts on that lens?

The other one that would come with it is the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens with Vibration Reduction.

There cheap kit style lens’s. Focus speed Ok is some situations and miserable in others, they’re progressive aperture and only go as low a F4, the image quality is again just OK. Your never going to get anything really epic out of them, but if that is all you feel you need then I wont try and talk you out of it, i just know that I tried that once, bought a pair of cheaper lens’s to cover my zoom range and it got old pretty quick. so I had to spend the money twice. Not to mention Im pretty sure those 2 lens’s together new are a bout 500 bucks maybe a bit more, your well over half way to a “good” lens that you wont ever have to upgrade from.

lol at ian saying “epic”

It’s part of a kit for $1000 with a bunch of other random things. I read the reviews on the 55-200 on kenrockwell.com and he had pretty good things to say about it. She isn’t going to be selling these or doing wedding photography with them so we will see how it goes for now.
