no start on 99 zx7r

I know this isnt a bike forum but the same macanics apply so any suggestions would help heres a general discription of the problem,

the bike is a 99 ZX7R 12k, carbarated

I pulled it out, and it tried to turn over even backfired a few times wouldn’t start let it sit overnight tried again the next day nothing… Choke on, key on in nuetral, thumb switch in run, gas tank in Res/On, half a tank of gas.

Pulled it apart regaped (to 6.5mm), and clean all 4 plugs, cleaned the air filter… now it will turn but it doenst even back fire. I check 2 plugs (one off each coil) both sparked and where soked in fuel. Im stumped even tried roll starting it with my car nothing. (yes i pulled it with the car to like 10mph and dumped the clutch just turned but never started).

How long has the bike been sitting without running? Where and how was it stored?

Check your battery. If you didn’t pull it out and put it on a trickle charger when you stored it, you may not have enough juice to start it properly. Check the voltage, and make sure it is right.

Sometimes carbed bikes take "a little lovin’ " to get started especially if they were stored improperly, or in the cold, or just old. There are a lot of possibilites why it isn’t starting, you need to eliminate the simple stuff first.

the battery was out on trickel charger, and had plenty of power, altho I also tried using a car battery still nothin (and bump starting it).the bike was in non-heated garadge (next to the mini) sitting on the kick stand with the battery out (in the house) and the seat off.

on a quik search I was thinking mabye bad gas, its been off the road for about 2 months.

I don’t think the gas wold ave gone bad in two months  but you should put some fuel stabilizer in there. Because the tank was half full, there is probably a lot of condenstation in your tank (thanks to the temperature swings we’ve had), so the water now in the fuel could be the cause of your problem. Whenever you store a bike, you should either fill the tank completely and add stabilizer, or drain the tank.

I’d say put a little more fuel in the tank and some stabilizer/octane and then try restarting it. You may need to help it along even when choked by rolling the throttle slightly It may take a while (more than 15 mintes). Just be sure you don’t kill the starter or flood the engine. It’s going to be difficult starting it in the cold.

thanks for ther adivice, Ill try fuel stabalizer, altho the 02 yzf600r storied next to it (with the battery in it) started right up on the first try. stupid kawi. I think next year im going to go look at a fuel injected bike.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that 02 YZF is fuel injected, therefore starting is WAAAAAY easier.

D’Oh! You stored it without a full tank? I’m going to go with condensation in the tank, plus it’s carberated so in the cold here you may need to reset the carbs.

its snowing again, so u can stop getting excited

no the tank was on it i took it off when i was working on it. but i was planing on take the bike down to florda so i still like to get it running i got a few ideas from the guys on wnysportriders to try (new plugs, fuel stabaliser)

no the yzf600r is carb, the yzfR6 is fuel injected.

Dump the tank. Rinse it out with some good gas, then fill it with good gas. At least drain the carb float bowls and hose em out with some WD-40 through the drain screw holes. Crank the shit out of it. Recharge, the battery, fiddle with the choke and the throttle, crank it some more. Get excited when it starts to catch, kick and swear when it stalls. Repeat 3-4 times. Charge the battery. Walk away. Drink a beer. Come back. Whack the throttle and choke wide open. Crank the f**k out of it, get the engine started, sputter out of the driveway, stall, start, sputter, rev the piss out of it, drive the rest of the summer with no problems.

Cliff Notes

Dump the tank & carbs, get good gas. Fawk with it till it lights off. Next year store it with a full tank treated with fuel stabilizer.
