The first comment on this story is a guy who works for the state complaining he’s loosing $374/mo in income, 4.19%… this means he makes ~ $9000/mo in income paid for by everyone in the state… $108,000 per year roughly…
Personally, if you or I am making that kind of $$, You gotta have some SERIOUS balls and gall to complain about a 4% pay loss.
He’s an asshole for complaining at his pay level…HOWEVER, I am a county emplyee, and the contract proposals have all been terrible…basically calling for a 3% raise (they owe us back to 2006 but will cap retro-pay at $1500) while forcing us to pay 15% of our health insurance, taking away 4 holidays, cutting lunches in half, and downgrading our vacation and sick time accruals…and for those of us at a working class wage in the county are losing an awful lot if one of these BS contracts go through. I make less than $30k FWIW, and if you account for all of those cuts I’d be losing hundreds of dollars worth of benefits too…
A lot of people don’t seem to understand this concept.
The guy in the OP’s article reminds me of all the union autoworkers that were complaining after the collapse in 2008. People that were making over a 100k a year to put windshield wipers on a car as it goes down an assembly line, I mean seriously? Give me a break. I remember some of them even had the nerve to complain that they wouldn’t be able to support their multiple residences.
you’re point is 100% true…but that’s not as much of a choice as you think. I was STUCK, literally STUCK working a dead end job at a parts department for a dealership at $10/hr for over a year prior to being LUCKY enough to get this job off a civil service test. The real problem is, the private sector is still hurting too poorly to hire on a junior architect with less than 5yrs experience…which would never have been a problem when I had started going to school. Before I could graduate, those entry level $45k+ jobs had all disappeared with the economy crash leaving me pretty much optionless. I get fed the lines all the time by my superiors that “we’re going to get you whwere you deserve to be ASAP, just hang in there” and “we know you’re being under-utilized and under-paid, we’re doing all we can to move you up”.
I’m not really complaining, I chalk it up to having to pay my dues and start at the bottom…I just really can’t handle getting my pay/benefits cut when I’m already low-man on the totem pole. Believe me, I’ve been trying like hell to find a better paying job, but there’s really nothing available, I’ve put out over 150 resume’s accross the country in various cities with only 2 call backs that only ended up being an interview where I was told hiring was not an option at this point in time.
At least I didnt get a degree to be a teacher LOL, that market is even worse.
the solution is to gradually increase how awesome you are and get better at tactfully and tastefully exuding your awesomeness such that it creates awesome opportunities for you.
or to tradebase’s point… find a way to drive $60k in value and you’ll get your $45k a year somewhere… relatively speaking of course.
that’s the plan, I’m the youngest guy in the office by roughly 20yrs, so I bring a lot of knowledge of newer technology to the table. I’m one of two people capable of running the laser and GPS locating equipment for surveys, and one of two currently going through training to become certified in NYS building code enforcement. There are going to be a lot of older dudes retireing in the next 5 yrs, so I should finally start to move up soon.
really curious as to what this guy does for a living…
i did some math real quick, and based on people using about 1/4 of their yearly income on a mortgage (27k in his case), on a 30 year mortgage he could easily afford a ~$750,000 house, minus ~$80 a week or not
In Ontario the Ontairo teacher’s union has made being a teacher one of the best jobs you can get. All the standard stuff, 3 months off a year etc. But you also get an $80k+ salary when you hit 8 years or something… and your pension is equivalent to someone who actually works a real job for a living and puts $2M in the bank and lives off the interest. Full benefits and all the other wonderfully undeserved features of being a part of a pwerful and profitably invested union.
I have no faith in pensions and wouldn’t contribute to my state pension if I was asked. I wouldn’t turn my back on a free pension of course, worth the gamble I suppose…just not on my dime and nothing I’d plan my life around.
How’s the economy up there Bing? You guys having any employment issues or what not? I have thought of moving to Canada before…or Australia for that matter.
I’d love everything about that job except for the fact I’d have to be Canadian. I mean no offense to that, but I like this country a lot. I couldn’t leave.
if you are a teacher then your life would be better up here… different if you were like in Cali or Phoenix on account of weather… but since you’re 20 minutes from the border you’ve got no excuse
mind you, even if you wanted to come north of the border i’m not sure that it would be easy to get a placement. like most unions i would assume you need an ‘in’.
you can imagine that with such a kick ass union and all the things mentioned above there are plenty of average people trying to become teachers… perfect case of people getting essentially $100k to do a $55k job on public money.
LOL @ Bings above comment (2nd one up). but its 100% true.
I see so many “we are hiring” signs all over the place. whether it be the standard 10.25$/hr min wage job or much more highly paid positions.
dont forget here we have healthcare free…
shit like occupy bay st. up here are just dumb and stupid. and have no relevance to canada (just saying)
futureshop and bestbuy alone in canada are supposed to hire THOUSANDS of employees for seasonal… plus those guys make commission!
I believe the ppl who said above… bing… like how if u drive the sales of the company , your value up! then u will get paid more. and it makes sense. unlike unions… who are money hungry middle mans. Id rather work on my own terms than EVER join a union. Unions are good for the good for nothing employee that doesnt hold his own. and deserves to be fired. detriot did well with unions… LOL sarcasm
just ranting
