The town is going to laugh at you if you ask them for money…
Target fixation. That is what put you down. Couple that with lack of ability (not being a dick, I am serious). If you weren’t speeding, unless that entire corner lane to lane was covered in shit, a good rider could make it out of the turn fine. Pics wernt clear enough to tell the true conditions so I wont make judgment on conditions.
Also this isn’t me assuming anything, this is first hand experience:
http://www.shift518.com/showthread.php?t=11773&page=2 Edit, holy shit I must have been on some gooood shit because I cant even follow my own reply with the bad spelling and whatnot. lol
I did the exact same thing. Saw the gravel, thought ohh fuck that’s not going to be fun and target fixated away from the gravel, and that’s (close) to where I ended up, except I hit a frickin tree instead of the grassy yard I was hoping for! There was shit in the inside of the turn when I went down, but knowing what I do now, I could have just changed my turn in point and avoided it, if I only looked to the right ahead of my turn, instead of bailing on the turn and looking left. I finally got to take my bike up around the sacandoga lake around the town of Day, Hadley and up around North shore to blast some turns last weekend. I just had some time to scrub the chicken strip off the bike… I was riding hard, and came into a few turns with some sand and gravel in them. Its still an unsettling feeling for sure, but somehow my brain just adjusts and works on memory and did exactly what I said above and went around it. Always look ahead and just let your brain pick you another line around the shit in the road, don’t be so quick to bail. It takes seat time, and more importantly a few mistakes along the way… there’s simply is no way around that fact. I am glad your OK, and aren’t giving up.
And I would NOT jump on a sport bike 600. Here is why. They are made to be pushed through a turn, not ridden through a turn. What I mean is they are sprung, valved and the geometry is made so they stick their best when they are aggressively sent around a turn. Get your braking and speed under control first, get your weight situated and get on the throttle around the turn to plant the bike. This will make your speeds go higher even if you are a responsible rider, so your mistakes like what happened here will be worse. You come into that turn on a sport bike too hot and lean it in fast and hard your rear tire will be very loose and you will slide it out trying to avoid junk in the road. My ducati is valved for a 180lb or so rider and I am 140 wet, and the bike is about 25lbs lighter from my mods. I have it set as soft as I can and I still have a hard time planting it in a turn sometimes. My confidence isn’t in the bike where it should be to ride it like I want to all the time. I have had the ass end slide out on me in turns and exiting turns more than a few times, because I just cant get the weight into it like the bike needs. The brakes are strong, but you have to be aware of them or they will bite you too. You wad on the brakes as hard as you probably did in your wipe out on that 300, and you without a doubt will have tucked a front tire on a 600 sport bike and have been much worse off. What I am saying is if you began to get comfortable on that 300 with soft suspension, geometry designed to be ridden easier through a turn, easy brakes, easy power delivery… stick to something like that. Getting on a Ninja 636 or something is the polar opposite machine… its not just more hp.
Holy fuck Mikey you relapsed bad… I think we need a shift intervention…
And vlad ease up pretty sure you’ve gone down a time or two
Looks like a total to me. All that plastic is pretty damn expensive.
If it is not a total and they want to fix, there will not be a salvage title, so no worries there.
Looks like the case for full face helmets has been made. Glad you’re intact.
KK said it re:target fixation. It happens. I’m guilty. I recommend a good read- “Proficient Motorcycling, the ultimate guide to riding well” it’s a good quick book and will make you think a bit about motorcycle physics and plant ideas in your brain to think about when you ride. Worth the $20 or whatever. Even if you take away one or two good habits, that’s potentially a life saver.
Make sure to get a buy back price if the insurance says its a goner! If the price is right someone could make a fun little ride out of that. Jussayin.
<I’m only hear to update the people who actually cared or were interested in the bike>
After running the scenario through my head over and over again…who knows, most likely it was target fixation. Although, being that it was pitch black out and bike lights aren’t exactly the best while in a lean (since one side of the light shoots up and the other just in front of you - you can’t see through the corner very well)…it could have been a combination of the two.
Regardless, I hit a crap load of gravel. It happened and I walked away from it with no bodily harm other than some pulled muscles and sore parts.
As for the bike:
I don’t think a buy back will be happening whether or not the price is good (I don’t think it will be).
As of Friday, Nationwide is waiting on a vendor to get back to them with a market value for the bike. With that, they will make the final decision. Based on what the claim representative got from me (list of parts and gear) and information/pictures from the adjuster, he says the bike will likely be a total loss.
Meaning, they will be giving me money for the bike + the aftermarket parts (I had up to 4k in coverage for aftermarket stuff) + the gear. All for $28/month (when everyone else was around $75-90 - check out Nationwide if you want to save some money!) for a first time rider.
Unless, of course, I have the process of how buy backs work completely wrong. I will ask the price, but if I have it right, it’ll be too high (due to the other stuff) for you guys to make any sort of reasonable offer.
Later.
good to see it is some what working out for you. look on the bright side, now you don’t have to store it for winter haha. you still physically ok? I know some stuff can come up days later.
if they total the bike, i doubt the buy back could be that bad. but thats just my opinion, not expierence.
Both my hands still hurt…feels like I jammed/bruised numerous fingers. And my right shoulder is still painful depending on motion. Certain things trigger pain. And my neck is still sore I guess as it hurts to swallow food or liquid. Otherwise I’m fine. I think this is all I’ll be dealing with as its been 9 days now.
It won’t be that high Ilya, but email me anyways. I’m betting less than 500 bucks. You’ve got my number and email
Really? So they’ll give me a couple G’s (I’m hoping for at least 5 with all of the gar and parts) and sell it back to me for $500ish? I figured they’d sell it back to me for what they could likely get for it on the auction (I assume that was at least like $1,500 due to the mileage and since it’s basically just fairings and such).
If it’s that low, I’m sure we can work something out. I will send you an email.
hey dont forget about me ilya! its usually 15-20% of the bikes worth im very interested in the bike
Only bummer is that they aren’t registrable in NY after is Totaled without a special inspection. After stuff of totalled ny is a cunt
Very short trip to vermont grab a PO box and register is there. Thats what a buddy did with his old rc51
Yup then you have to tow it to Vermont for an inspection. It’s a pain in the balls compared to having the bike legit.
i havent had a issue with the last few bikes i repaired and took over to get inspected took about an hour of my time and i had the paper work for a rebuilt title
im in the process of doing this right now with a sv650 i bought and fixed up, so aslong as you have all your paper work and nothing is stolen that you put on the bike your good to go
When I get the buyback price, highest bidder will take it. I will definitely keep you and Chad in the loop.
And yeah, I did that VT thing with a Maxima I had bought at Copart in New Jersey. Ended up never actually getting it titled because it was shot.
Bought a 97 Green GXE with 70kmi on it that was stolen (no interior) and was going to swap my interior from my car (160kmi) to it…ended up having a shot tranny, cut harnesses, etc. so it just sat in my yard as a parts car for a while.
I thought VT changed their laws now though? I was one of the last to get in that way…or so I was told.
hmm, but your bike was a 300 so that may have also been a factor.
300 is definitely a huge factor in insurance, same with enduro bikes. It won’t be that cheap if you decide to get another now that you’ve totaled one though
Chad and Morgan…Nationwide came back to me. Bike is totaled. Their salvage value on the breakdown is $1,381. Message me your offers if you’re still interested and I will do the math to see if it’s worth buying it back. They are willing to give me just shy of $7k for everything if they take it. If I buy it back, it’s around $5,300 that I get a check for. I’m thinking that’s going to be the better option in this particular case (letting them take it).
