nyspeed engineers, how has school really helped you?

Be very careful about discussing or showing drawings to other possible employers, that could be a slippery slope that would include not being eligible to get your PE and possible fines/jail time. Even with out a title block. You have to pay attention to any contracts you sign as to who owns your work and any ideas that come about from said work.

This scares me because that is a core engineering class, well that combined with half the shit you post scares me…

I only show drawings of personal projects, never anything from a previous employer. That could be some seriously bad news, I know.

Ever hear the saying “Dress for the job you want”?

Kind of a stupid move, man.

as far as a portfolio mine showcased:

1.) My Monte Carlo Project… building an engine from scratch with tons of pictures
2.) My Battlebot Build, showed every step from design phase to combat, including marketing. Showed pictures that were pulled from T.V. as well as from the video game that we made it into. Once i had a good feel for the interviewer…i would whip out the pic of me with Carmen Electra.

It makes sense to show that you have hands-on experience and a head on your shoulders with a portfolio.

jesus. did u atleast spike/cut the mullet into a mohark?

My Portfolio has a lot of work from Prior Employers… but it’s all stuff that’s now “public knowledge”. Anything that has IP or isn’t available to the public isn’t in there.

lol i didnt have any crazy hair it was combed down, but the piercings i should have taken out, o well =/

Combed down and multi-colored?

Interviews… yea, gotta be VERY professional. I have an earing, and I even take that out for interviews. I didn’t wear it at this job for a month or 2… then I started, and no one cares; but that was only after being in the enviornment, establishing my reputation within the company, and observing what others in the department/company do.

Newman… well, he’s an exception… most places you would NOT get away with what he does when it comes to “Crazyness”.

Newman also does R&D and interned there before being hired full time IIRC. It’s not that he is getting away with too much, he just does his job well so no one cares.

:picard: Ignore all my previous advice. It’s all moot. Ignorance can be fixed. Stupid is forever.

Exactly… You build a reputation at a company and get “in” with the correct people… Management tends to care less about things like that when you can get jobs done on-time or early, and on or under-budget. But it takes time to get that reputation and earn the respect from your superiors.

went to school for civil engineering.
but then switched a semester before graduation, to go welding instead.
haven’t looked back really.
Going to finish it, obviously.
But probably not going to get a job doing Civil.
Will probably switch over to Mech…

I’m not sure for how long, but he did actually dress normal for a while when he was first hired.

lol i get the point about looking professional

Since it is all about networking, any job openings for an MET out there?

I of course read this as Monte Carlo simulation method not Monte Carlo the vehicle.

Agree with most said here. Here is what helped me and others I have seen climb up the ladder.

My degree has help me get in the door and gave me the fundamentals needed to make sound and wise decisions…

With that said, I learned 90% of job related specifics on site or through various experiences, not in school.

I could write a ton of what to do and how to succeed but I simply do not feel like writing a small novel right now!

^^bumped an old post =p, a lot has changed since then for me

lets hear it! I was wondering since I read you said you don’t work at the oil change place anymore.

graduated and got a real job, I hope?

edit: wow, I didnt realize this thread was a year old already. damn.
