my brother got me a $100 bond… I waited 8 years to cash it after finding it thinking “hmm… may as well do it now before i lose it” …and got $62.00 for it. I basically waited 8 years for it to increase in value by $12 (original purchase price of $50). 8 years ago when i was starving in college i could have used $50… today $62 doesn’t mean as much to me now.
as we get older…(usually) as kids or young adults the money is more valuable to them at the moment. Eventhough the face value goes up, as you get older and value of having it goes down.
i bought a GIC with an extra $1000 i had after first year university… after the 3 year period i cashed it for $1,050.
i will never buy a GIC again so long as i live…
you can drop $1,000 in pennies on the ground and accidentally pick up $1,050.
and i remember some silly investment advisor (read: no education saleswoman trained to sell the bank’s investment products with a silly bank-branded certificate on the wall) looking over my profile when i set up a RRSP and she was praising what a good investment decision that GIC was… FUUU!!!
I actually went to strong museum 2 days ago LoL, it is pretty cool. he would definitely love it. some of it was even cool for me and im 20, and i went there with a 19 year old… so its not like we took a little kid lol
they WILL remember something like that for a very long time, which is the reason we went there
I only put $250, so you know that I’m not going to buy him some stupid fucking $500 playhouse when he’s two.
My sister and brother-in-law don’t have as much liquid cash as I do (for obvious reasons), therefore if something BIG needs to be purchased in the future for birthdays, I don’t have a problem doing it (Power Wheel, Play house etc).
I ended up having my main broad go to Toys-R-Us for me and picked up some stuff. Puzzles, arts & crafts, a “no mess” finger painting easel, a few toys to help learn colors and numbers and a rc car that he should be able to use now ,if not…really soon. I haven’t seen any of it yet, I’ll see it when he opens it. All for under $100.
I plan on taking him somewhere soon, I’m just waiting until the right thing comes along at the right age.
