Because tree man will amuse us, where as the end of the world isn’t very relevant if you think about it. If one person, or a lot of people die, it would be a tragedy, and it would have serious after effects. If everyone died, there would be none. Everyone would be dead. That would be it. No one would know that people are dead, because they’d be dead too. It’s the whole tree falling in the woods scenario. If no one is there to register it happening, it didn’t happen. Therefore, the world can’t end, because if it did, nobody would even know.

The Large Hadron Collider is not trying to recreate the Big Bang.
That would be redundent as we already know what happend in the Big Bang after the first .3 seconds.
One of the things the series of experiments will try to show is what happend prior to .3 seconds, since that is the part we do not understand. It will also show us if the theories that we think are true today are true, becuase it will provide solid backing to some of the universal laws of physics that we use today.
It will also show us if Cold Dark Matter really exhists, and if the experiment is sucessfull will be a major breakthrough in showing us what is happening and what happend in the universe.
The main thing it is trying to find out is if the Higgs Boson is a real thing, and if they show it is this will complete the Standard Physics Modle and open the doors to many new things.
The liklyhood that this creates strangelets (these are just a theory never proven to exhist) or even micro black holes (even Steven Hawking (one of the main theorizers on Black Holes) has said that even if they were created they would pass through the earth so quickly that nothing would happen).
It is a great experiment.
