*OFFICIAL* Buffalo Sabres 2007 Off-Season Thread

I hope so mr. McAss but I really need Vanek to be better in the playoffs for that kind of $.

However I do totally agree that if he stays on pace he will be a bargain in the last half of his contract.

But what you have to understand, is that this is going to happen to every team eventually, and Buffalo just happened to be the first in line.

Edmonton actually helped the team out by getting Vanek to sign a 7 year contract.

Vanek is going to be overpaid for 2 seasons, maybe 3 at the most. After that, he will be well worth the 7 million/season. He scored 42 or 43 goals in his first year in the AHL, 25 in his first year in the NHL and 40 something in his sophmore year…at the age of 23. Keep in mind that he was on Buffalo’s 3rd line averaging around 16 minutes per game. Give him top line minutes and he will have over 100 points.

I agree 100% with that.

Vanek didn’t get a lucky year.

As well as the fact that everyone is so quick to forget the good that Sabres management has done They have been a successful, competitive team for a number of years now, and I doubt it’s by chance.

2turbo- This past playoffs, Vanek had 10 points. Drury had 12 and Briere had 11. He was just as good in the playoffs, while playing less ice-time.

Ummmm…on the radio this morning out of 288 players polled they ranked Buffalo last on the list of teams they would like to play for.

Largely in part to the management team.

Bah…with your facts and good points!

I just need a warrior out there in crunch time so he has a way to go.

During the playoffs last year I gained a TON of respect for 23

Lost any good feeling about 48 the Penalty Box King

And 26 still needs to win my approval…I have sat behind the bench a couple times and he does take shifts off when he is having a bad game. I need him to become a force and a point machine. I also need him to show alot of heart this year to show he is worth every penny.

You just can’t compare Vanek to Drury, he is not that type of player. Vanek is more of a Jagr/Gretzy (stfu, I know he isn’t half the player Gretzky is, but I’m talking more in terms of playmaking ability) type of player. Gaustad is going to have to be the grinder and be more of the Drury on the team. I think some of you are forgetting how important #28 was becoming to the team before he got injured.

Add in the mix a healthy Connolly with a full off season to train, and the Sabres aren’t far from what they were last year. I seem to remember Buffalo beating Toronto 6-1 when both captains were injured…

I feel for Vanek, because for some unknown reason, despite being an awesome goalscorer, the fans haven’t taken to him.

There’s no reason for the fans to not like him, except that the local market didn’t have a place for him yet. His 1st year, he was horrible defensively. He worked on that in the offseason, and developed his back-checking. (yes, there is still room for improvement.)

Actually, that is the scary thing about VAnek. He is so talented and skilled already, and such a good smart offensively player, and he still is so young and has so much to learn.

What do Ovechkin and Crosby make a season out of curiousity?

Crosby averages 3.7 million a season. RFA after the upcoming season.

Ovechkin averages 3.8 million a season. RFA after the upcoming season.

Both will recieve substantial raises.

possible outdoor game in buffalo on new years at the Ralph

(WGR 550) - Multiple NHL sources have told WGR that the Sabres are in line for a potential New Year’s Day game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Another source, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Penguins have agreed to be the visiting team for such a contest, with Buffalo and Detroit as possible homes. It’s also reporting that NBC is tentatively calling the event, “The Ice Bowl.”

That’d be pretty damn awesome to see.

isnt the football season still going on January 1st?!?! that could be a problem

Bills have an away game on the 1st, so no conflict.

I will be there fo shizzle!

1st actually falls on a Tuesday according to the calender I’ve got here in front of me.

So there should be no conflict whatsoever.

Thats awesome but isn’t January 1st too soon. Last year it was still pretty warm around that time.

They basically build a rink on the field. I’m guessing they could put the coolant lines under the ice if needed.

Want to talk about a really weird coincidence? Miller could end up playing goal for two football stadium hockey games. This would be his 2nd.
