2009 NHL Draft/FA thread

one can only dream, but it would be nice if the sabres could actually somehow trade up for an amazing pick…and get tavares, duchene or hedman :frowning:

go sabres :meh:

What would be really nice is to see them get some leadership for this team through free agency but I think we all know that isn’t going to happen. They’re going to put the same team on the ice that left the ice back in April. Yay! Another season of fighting for the eighth spot.

word.

two years in a row fighting for 8th spot…would have much rather come in dead last, then we could have at least got some much needed talent from the draft

as long as they’re “in the playoff hunt” people still buy the tickets. That’s all they care about, how to get the most money out of us while spending the least.

Meh, dont plan on anything big from the draft gents. Im more interested as to whether we go for Bouwmeester or not.

:mamoru:

yeah, because the sabres are going to spend big money on a free agent.
Just like they did on… um, Jaro Spacek?

Whoaaa slow down there buzzkillington…

Read that, we can make it work financially. It will take a few moves though. I also believe we are one of the 4 teams in talks for him…

Of course we CAN. Doesn’t mean that we will. In fact, we won’t. Darcy pretty much said so the other day in his press conference.

Link to conference? And did you actually read the article? The way he writes it out still leaves us with 5 or 6 mill in cap space which was the same we had last year. It just involves cutting some dead weight…

Im not saying it will happen but its more of a possibility than acquiring any impact players with the 13 pick. All I can say is TO lol.

ive been saying this since the end of of last season…fuck i even traded for him in NHL09 hahaha…and i want this more than anything. Big D offensive D man…which is one huge gap we need filled, but in all reality, im 99% positive we will NEVER get him. i HOPE they prove me wrong, but i just dont see it happening.

the cap should be set to 57mil which doesnt leave us much room for anything… plus im sorry, but sabres front office just doesnt do anything anymore…it sucks, but its the truth.

Sorry, I don’t have links. They were playing it on WGR the other day. Anyways, we’ve always had cap space. The issue is that the Sabres won’t spend to the cap. They never will. Believe me, I would love to see a good guy like Bouwmeester but in reality, it just won’t happen. Sabres upper management has a waiting list for season tickets and know that whatever they put on the ice people are going to pay to come see. So why make a big splash in free agency and spend all that money when they really don’t have to? It doesn’t come down to putting a better product on the ice. It comes down to a better financial bottom line. The only thing the Sabres will do in the offseason is draft some kids and possibly bring up one or two guys from the farm for this coming season. That’s it.

Oh and Terell Owens is great and all, but let’s face it, that’s football. Hockey is much different. The Sabres are not going to bring someone like Shawn Avery (probably the closest hockey equivalent to T.O.) into the organization.

QFT

You can watch the conference at sabres.com. I also don’t think they will do anything as well. Pretty much said it was a bad way to do business and blamed last year on the injuries. I would be shocked if we make a move for a player i’ve heard of.

Not only will the sabres not spend the dough to get B-meester… Plus, I’m pretty sure the sabres aren’t on his wish list. We are one of 6 teams negotiating the rights to throw him an offer. We spend too much money on the useless players in this organization that we have had blind faith in for too many years to be able to pick up anyone halfway decent. Not to mention we trade too many people for draft picks that go un-used.

The 2006-07 sabres will be the last cup contending team we have for ~9 years.

I just laugh when people think Stafford, Pominville and Gaustaud are going to lead this team to any sort of championship. They are C-list players at best and are lucky that the sabres are paying them as much as they are, because any other management staff wouldn’t throw these guys anything more than a small term contract for under 3 mil and nothing but a hope and a prayer.

Not to mention, our first line is a joke.

We can draft whomever we want, it doesn’t matter. They won’t have the chemistry with the other players. (See : Afinogenov)

PS - We need to sign Gaborik. However, it seems as though Pavel Demitra and the Canucks are tampering with him. :uhh:

:word: to Beck.
Oh, and hte Flyers got Pronger. Add one more Eastern Conference team that is much better than the Sabres.

Yea i heard that as well I cant believe Anaheim gave him up… didnt see that coming.

You should stick to your day job, you don’t really know what you’re talking about as far as hockey goes. I agree that the Sabres made several questionable signings including Pominville, Hecht, and Connolly, but suggesting we need a player like Gaborik is just ridiculous. We already have a “skilled” forward made of glass in Tim Connolly. This team is way too soft and needs to gain a huge amount of size and physicallity in order to compete with the big boys.

If I were the GM, I’d start by dropping Hecht, Pominville, Afinogenov, Tallinder, Mair, and possibly Lydman, which would free up roughly 18.5m from last season/this season, bring up a couple youngsters from Rochester, probably Kennedy, Weber, and Gerbe, and go after J-Bo (7.5m), Mike Knuble (3m), and Francois Beauchemin (2.5m). Maybe some gritty veteran forwards like Travis Moen (1.5m), Stephane Yelle (1M), or Ian Laperriere(2m). Resign the restricted free agents Stafford (3m), Sekera (1.2m), and MacArthur (900k)

Team would look like this:

Vanek Connolly Stafford
Gerbe Roy Knuble
MacArthur Gaustad Kaleta
Kennedy Yelle Laperriere

Rivet J-Bo
Beauchemin Sekera
Myers Butler
