I was all ready to get a new truck when I just finally sat down to figure out how much I was spending on what and where all my money went. Well it seems that I am somehow driving about 2500 miles a month and spending about 150 in gas in a 33 mpg small car. Now I am really starting to rethink the idea of a truck as my only vehicle.
My best and honest guess at what you will get in the chevy is probably realistically around 15-16 as an average of normal driving.
hypertech, ditch EGR, and run LS1 fans or 05 and up Efans. get a good cat back and a open filter and youll have some decent mileage in older years hopefully. but that EGR is killing hte mpg
LS1 fans, call brian for price
K&N kit…new say 200 bucks
cat back…say 200 t0 300bucks
hypertech…300bucks
all can be found used and alot cheaper
i was getting steady 18mpg without the efans and hypertech. tuned it for 93 and run Efans and get 20mpg in the summer
if you decide to get a truck. make sure you get 373s. the 342 models dont get as good mpg as the 373s since the 342 trucks have work alittle harder to move the weight of the trucks. also the 5.3 wont work as hard as the smaller 4.8 or 4.3 trucks when doing any duty
so i should try and get brian to find me an 02 instead of the 01 he has on his lot?
this is really going to boil down to what my monthly payment will be. old lady dont care if i keeo the cobra. but i wouldnt feel bad about selling it to pay for the truck. i never drive the thing. it will be 2 years in november since its left the garage for over a hour. hmmm guess gotta try and see what the payments would be like.
no the 01 brian has will do good also. the mileage wont be that much of a difference. also if you ahve a lead foot you wont get that great of mileage anyways. its basically the same as a 01,02 fbody without the EGR. youll be fine
from what they tell you, you should get better mpg with it but most rides ive seen without it get better mpg. i do know that they used to called the 02 models the factory freaks. as in mpg and performance and those years didnt have the EGR
I think the LT4s didn’t have EGR either. My understanding is that the EGR (besides the emissions reasons) also helps keep the combustion chamber cooler at low speeds by displacing some of the air which results in less fuel, less heat, and less chance of detonation (like if you’re lugging the engine in a high gear). But with a bigger cam you get the same cooling effect as the EGR, which is why I’m dumping mine.
So I could see why EGR should give a little better gas mileage at light throttle. :dunno:
Oh thats going to go up. I spend between 40 and 50 bucks a week on gas. I have a 26 gallon tank and fill up when I hit 20 gallons on the fuel used gauge. With travelling to work and having other running around. IF I just go to work I can stretch it to 1.5 to 2 weeks on a tank.
