If there is one… Id say he does.

Wow, damn sweet deal. If my actuator is broken I may have to jump on that. Beats 750 for a new one. 24k is plenty new enough for me.

Dan

Yeah, I remember doing the DP on my A4, fun fun. The combination of extensions and knuckle sockets with a crows foot to get the one nut off was more joy than I can handle for a lifetime.

I left work at lunch and came home since I couldnt stand not knowing.

I pulled off the DP (and ya that lower bolt sucked), slid back the down pipe and saw this:

Then looked down into the cat and fished this out.

Now that I think of it we always had this wierd rattle that was louder/quieter (or just gone) depending on throttle positon and/or clutch engaged or disengaged. I dont reacall hearing that today…

Anyway, looks like I just need to find a new turbo and shoudl be back in business, hopefully running normal boost for once.

Dan

yeouch. good find, snag the k03sport from audizine!

Well isn’t that some crazy stuff. Any particular reasoning as to why that happened?

Pretty common stuff. First thing you hear is a real tinny rattle that almost sounds like a chain tensioner, especially when you rev it up quickly at idle. That noise is the wastegate “puck” starting to get loose on the wastegate lever. Over time, they just burn through.

^^^ yep, now that sound makes PERFECT FN SENSE.

Ah well. Turbo is almost out.

Probably will snag that one on audizine. I already PMd him about it. Perhaps I should just buy it now…

Dan

Yeah, I remember the first one I heard years ago. I would have put money on it being the chain tensioner.

Good work on the turbo. It really isn’t a horrible job if you’ve got a decent selection of 17mm swivels and such.

That turbo is gone… looking again

ebay…

cut down a 17mm box wrench for the lower nut, remove the two outer bolts and then the inner after you remove the support strut allen bolts or your ratchet is trapped on the back bolt. REPLACE ALL 3 TURBO BOLTS AND WASHERS, they are torque to yield bolts, and compression lock washers. you’re out $10 @ VWOP and they’re usually in stock when i call steve. good luck

After a break from 5-10pm to run to hang with the fam and then run to Ithaca “quick” to get the suburban from my inlaws, I deiced to tear into the car a bit more so I can do the timing belt and water pump while its down (not to mention I bought the parts in April).

Anyway, 2 hours later Im at this:

I also took a few min to bolt up the first prototype alternator bracket and tensioner that Im making for the wifeys 16v (ABA 90A alternator and serp belt)… still have a long ways to go.

And unpacked these for the same project

Ok its totally fn bed time.

Dan

LOL same thing happened to mine.

Once you are done with the A4 it should be in tip top shape. I wussed out and had someone do my timing belt for $300, looking back at it, it is a SIMPLE job, but I needed the car done as it is the DD. I also like the brackets for wifeys 16V

Got a lot done last night:

Timing belt etc all off and the most of the new parts on. Im just short the idiler pulley which should be here tomorrow.

Water pump out, tstat and cover changed.

Valve cover gaskets changed and the surrounding areas cleaned of grease and grime. Also I didnt notice any slude of any kind, which is a big relief. The wear on the cam lobes and chain tensioner looked good IMO for 145k. (i forgot to upload pics).

Hosed the mountains of fuzz, dirt, etc out of the radiator and IC. I think both will prob be 15% more efficient now.

Then I spent a bunch of time cleaning up grease and grime from all over the engine bay (frame rails, motor etc).

And finally pulled the non working headlight washer pump and RTVd an ABS disc over the hole (stupid ass thing).

Tonight I have to play race car mechanic, but tomorrow nite Im expecting to get the turbo in and finish up the timing and water pump etc. With any luck, itll be driving around sat sometime.

Dan

If you are looking for anything to do, drive an hour west, I have 5 Audis that you can find multiple thinkgs to fix on. I’m sure that you can crank them out in 2 days

I only wish I had extra time to work on other stuff. I need to get this done and get cranking on the cabriolet if its ever to be driven .

Dan

Of course I have to stay in the garage til 1am or later every nite to get this sort of work done fast… makes for long days at real work. ugh

Dan

The car is all back together and making the correct boost once again. I pretty much finished up friday and was just waiting for the new oil feed line, which never showed sat. Til that shows I pressure flushed the orig line out with fresh oil and just put it on. I finished filling the fluids, checking for leaks (100% leak free) and put the bumper cover etc all back on. Wifey will be driving it to work tomorrow.

I did notice one strange thing. At first it was only boosting like 5-6psi, then it spiked just once to about 20. Since then its rock solid around 9. Im wondering if it was relearning how much boost to run or something? Anyway, it seems good now.

Next up, new ss brake lines and a new drivers front axle assy.
