Open air Subwoofer

Does anybody know anything about the difference between an “open air” subwoofer and a normal one? Im looking to replace the stock sub on my Cadillac. The sub is located on the rear parcel shelf and the back of the sub is open to the trunk. Someone on the Deville forum said to make sure to get an open air one. Do i really need it? Also, is a DVC or SVC better for this application? This shit gets confusing lol. Thanks!

open air means that its not meant to fit in an enclosure, a normal subwoofer is designed to have a certain amount of air/resistance that helps it perform better

as far as dual voice coil (dvc) or single voice coil (svc) you will need to see what ohm the factory sub is (if you plan on using factory amp/wiring) and get a sub with identical ohm/voice coils… id imagine the factory is a svc and you will have to check it to see how many ohms it is.

nah, i wont be keeping the factory wiring. Ive already have a 10" sub in a box and an 600 watt rms amp. The amp i have is an old mtx 6001.

just leave the factory one disabled and put a box in the trunk… open air subs don’t really work well

What you are looking for is called infinite baffle. The woofers are design to be stiffer to prevent them from bottoming out, since you are essentially using your sealed trunk as the enclosure. My experience with them is they can be great, but are very sensitive to their conditions. For example if you have rear seats that fold down, they may not sound as good with them down.

You can read up a bit on it here

I had two 12" IB subs in my car 12 years ago and they sounded great. If you have a factory location to mount them go for it.

I just hate the trunk space that it takes up and the one i have is already cracked so i figured this would be as good a time as any to reclaim some of my trunk space.
Im not looking for earth shattering bass here nor am i looking to win SPL contests, i just want a little more bass than the factory can provide me with. Maybe i’ll call crutchfield and see what they have to offer…

Just throw a regular 10 in it, thats all you need in my opinion, I used to have 2 12’s that pounded pretty good but now I don’t need it to be that loud.
