Paging evolve & other vzw cell phone guru's...

I’m going to be spending a couple of weeks comissioning a new plant outside of Fort Wayne, Indiana. My job involves a fair amount of down time when working on site, so I’m going to turn on unlimited data to my phone.

Q1 - Can I turn unlimited data back off after I get home?

Beyond that I’d like to be able to get some work done and internet’s not available on site during construction. I have have dialup internet access through Praxair.

Q2 - Hacked or not, is there a way I can tether my i730 to my laptop as a modem?

Q3 - Rather than use the PX dialup account, can I go online with my laptop via vzw internet access?

yes

yes

and

yes

does VZW charge additional fees for tethering the phone ?

I’ve always used mine and they’ve never caught it, but I heard that it is just some phones that they aren’t able to track if you have it tethered or not.

I know sprint has an additional fee for tethering.

there is an additional fee for teathering. teathering without a plan is against TOS. thats not to say it cant be done, but it is against it.

flying under the radar is easier on the 1x network if you dont plan to pay for it.

data without a data plan will cost $0.015/kb.

its a feature that you can add and drop anytime without effecting the contract.

if you have a full data plan on a smartphone or blackberry, can you tether without an additional charge that way?

:wstupid:

They have tethering plans that are $80 a month on top of your regular minutes plan. I believe they are capped at 5GB/mo even though they claim to be unlimited…

tethering plans are $15 on top of the unlimited data plan, so $60. there are also the core choice plans, but those arent whats being discussed here.

the unlimited part means airtime, not bandwidth. they do cap the bandwidth at 5gb. there is reason for it, but thats not being discussed either. do i like the way they market it? nope.

yes you can tether without the tethering plan, however if you are only using it for a month, and you plan to USE it, just do it. that way you dont have to worry about them finding out and killing your account for TOS violation. if you are gonna use it sparringly then whatever.

:word:

i use it only when traveling and I don’t travel much… probably why I don’t have an issue.

im curious if they killed my account due to TOS violation do i have to pay early cancellation fees? :stuck_out_tongue:

Cool. I’ll only be out there for 2 weeks, so I figure there will only be a couple of times when things will be real slow and I’ll want to go online with the laptop to get some work done. I’ll just turn on the data and tether at will.

can always play stupid if it gets hairy… how else would you know? :stuck_out_tongue:

let me know when u want the data turned on, i can do it real quick.

My bad on the mis-information. Last I saw the tethering plans were $79 but that might be the price for the air cards. In any event, take Jeff’s word for it.

they have even dropped the price on the aircards (when you dont already have a vzw phone) from that $79.99 to $59.99. still expensive but for people with no cable/dsl looking at adding a landline and paying for dialup, its a viable option as long as they arnt going crazy with bandwidth.

haha thats pretty funny - so basically tether away until you get a letter?

I had wondered what caused AT&T to do the same price drop, about a week ago…competition is king
