i always get those stupid spam mails about getting paid to take surveys online… blah blah blah… but i was just wondering if they really did work? has anyone tried to do this and not been scammed?

you have to pay to take a survey? haha… screw that.
The ones that are legitmate will pay, most of the time those are in person or over the phone, and not online, and you never have to pay to sign up. They also only come around once in a while because they are looking for certain demographics for each one.
