We have an issue with woodchucks and chipmunks digging holes all over the yard. I plan on getting a Pellet gun to take care of this problem but was wondering about the laws. I searched on google and the closest thing I could find was a law in pa stating that if the pest was causing property damage than it’s ok to kill it. I know thats not NY but one would think it isn’t to far off from what the laws are here. But than again, it is NYS.
you are supposed to trap and relocate them.
you have other options tho, if you use your imagination.
pellet gun wont take down a chuck. Use a rifle or a shotgun. Depending where you live that is. I use a .22 mag and go for headshots, or if im feeling destructive, my 12 gage. Can’t wait to pick one off with the 30-06
BB gun will take down a woodchuck. My brother has a 1000 fps bb gun, plenty powerful enough to take out a critter.
Doubt it.
Anyway, you’re not talking about pest control. Killing an animal with a firearm is typically called “hunting.” The good news is that woodchucks are not a protected species so you don’t need a license to hunt them. I can only assume that the same holds true for chipmunks (though grey squirrels can only be shot in season, for example.)
I think you’re in a grey area. You can’t discharge a firearm within 500 feet of any building that you don’t own and airguns are typically considered firearms, so if you have neighbors that don’t like what you’re doing you’ll at least get harassed by the police if not charged with something.
I believe there were a few cases of kids killing squirrels with BB guns and they were charged with animal cruelty. I’d check before you start shooting.
Fuckin awesome!!!
you can kill most varmints with a well placed shot from a 1200fps air rifle. I still think you need to be kinda close though.
I have a few HUGE chucks in my yard, they are so frtiggen big the dog runs from them. Someone just suggested using black/red pepper i guess the chucks hate the stuff
not going to happen unless hes 5 feet from it.
A 22LR with cb’s isn’t any louder then those 1000+ FPS pellet gun and works 100x better.
The BB guns from Walmart are like 500 fps…those take down squirrels no problem. I think a 1,000+ FPS bb gun can take out a wood chuck. There is only one way to find out
but yeah…nice .22 would work well also.
.
Yeah…I used to fire a crosman air rifle (no CO2). We had squirrels that were eating through garbage cans and garbage. The gun couldn’t have been more than 600 fps and thats generous. It dropped them like a sack of dirt from across the yard. Now if your shooting across the woods thats a different story. Not only is it less accurate but not as powerful as a .22. I could be wrong but I would think a 1,000+ fps would take down a small critter from across an average sized yard.
Just what I wanted to hear, but the 500 feet is the only thing that really bothers me. My one neighbors are dicks. For example, they called the police on us for blowing off fire works 2 nights before the 4th…
The farthest I’ll be shooting is around 50 yards. The gun is a .117 cal break barrel. Robot or human?
With the right pellet I shouldn’t have any problems.
Nothing about woodchucks unfortunately.

Aaaaaand… just stop.
There’s no way in hell you’re going to take down a woodchuck with a 0.177 pellet at anything over 10-15 yards. Especially at supersonic muzzle velocities the pellet’s going to tumble or even break apart, so you probably don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of even hitting the damn thing. If anything you’re just going to wound it and that’s just plain cruel. Besides, if the neighbors are calling the cops on you for fireworks, you’re going to wind up in the back of a cop car if you’re out in a residential neighborhood with a rifle.
don’t they sell poisons that you can set out to kill vermin?
