photo of dying marine published sparks outrage

Why would the media “all of a sudden” start showing scenes like this? There are thousands of car accidents everyday and not a single shot you see in the paper or on the news shows a body. They only show the cars and maybe some blood.

Think about all the shit they could put in the paper and choose not to. This should not have been printed.

haha, I was so focused on how odd the word dying is.

Yeah I don’t really know how to react on this one. War sucks balls. Warriors die fighting. People back home will NEVER understand, seeing a photo of a dying Marine is not going to impart that experience. Getting a chunk of shrapnel in your back, having a round stuck in our IBA, hearing how much like a movie a ricocheting bullet sounds as it whizzes by your head, or having your HMMWV obliterated around you by an EFP teaches that. It amazed me that the people that make these decisions have never experienced these situations. THey are so far disconnected that that picture of that Marine does nothing for or to them. I see it and I think of how helpless his buddies must be feeling there. Providing security, CASEVAC, waiting for the Bird to take him away. Waiting for incoming, or the next IED, or a Sniper on a mountain a klick or more away. Fuck that.

I will remember that when people are walking around in a hospital trying to get pictures of little kids dying.

Get fucking real. This is totally fucking DISCUSTING!!! Write a real story to get attention, don’t use the last seconds of a soldiers life to make you feel good about your waste of a journalistic career.

I think they should stop this imbeding bullshit and let these hacks travel around the country un guarded. Fuck em.

Have you been living under a rock? All media has been for a long time is shock and awe. Media companies run whatever gets attention and ratings. The more controversial the better. When was the last time you didn’t flip through a website, pick up a paper, or watch the news and didn’t hear about death/killing?

people back home also do not understand this. those abbreviations are just jibberish to civilians. i hate when vets talk to people and expect everyone to know what that all means.

Bullshit. Emphasis on the second part of statement.

Some time ago I would have commented on the insensitivity of the publisher but today I am glad they published it.

People sit here in their little bubble drinking beer on the couch and don’t see what is going on over there. Low life politicians are sending guys out to that shit hole to die for no real good reason.

People need to see 19yr old kids dying slowly… maybe then they will begin to stand up and say WHAT THE FUCK?

IBA: Individual Body Armor

HMMWV: HUMVEE

CASEVAC: Casualty Evacuation (MEDEVAC is medical evacuation)

EFP: Explosively formed penetrator or projectile. A really bad IED (Improvised Explosive Device).

You don’t like it when vets talk about what? I don like when engineers start spouting their “jibberish” either, what’s your point?

If you want to know the lingo JOIN THE ARMY!!! YAY!

if the fam says no it shouldnt have been released… otherwise, i’m okay with it.

This. Exactly this.

Ding.

This

If the public view an image like this then they will think more seriously the next time they see a headline about American troops getting killed in combat. The image is not that graphic and I know the next time I see a story about troops give the ultimate sacrifice I’ll have even greater respect.

It’s a big part of the American problem that we buy without understanding the cost of what we purchase, this makes is more real and tangible.

With all that said I find it sad that the media went against the family’s wishes :frowning:

If I was that soldier I would want the picture published, it would give my death more value and meaning.

How many foreign victims of bombings have you seen in the pages of our newspapers or as video clips on the evening news? Did anyone stop to ask the families of those people if it was OK for us to gawk at the carnage of their family members? Why is it suddenly so much more “immoral” when the subject is an American GI?

What about this man?: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/08/12/world/0812-GEOR_3.html

Or these prize winning photos?: http://www.ap.org/media/flash/pulit.swf

I saw this first on MSNBC. The next day the story was all over because of how graphic the picture was.

Here’s the story behind the picture:

Kinda made my dad sick, besides himself for a little while, my brother is set to deploy in April. He’s in 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines. He knows what he signed up for…still kind of a shocker.

He’s been telling me a lot about whats going on over there from the little news he gets. From what I gather its nearly all bombs and such that are getting our guys, not them actually fighting us. They’ve ramped up training on identifying bombs and places where they will be.

Also said for the most part that the media and reporters, are full of shit. He’s sick of them using whatever they want for their gain.

His only question about the whole article is why there were 11 marines, thats not really a standard number to send out, there’s usually a minimum of 13 I think he said. (overall leader and 3 groups of 4 I assume?). Don’t get much talk time with him lately.

He also told me they are more worried about “hearts and minds” than anything else, and that we are getting them. If he’s told BS so be it I guess.

People are living in such fear over there of the Taliban that they don’t know what to do, all they know is we’re generous and giving and the Taliban have oppressed them, slowly its turning around in our favor and they people are rating them out.

He sure has not deployed before I take it? Once on the ground you do what you can with what is provided. If you are short troops you are still going to be going out and handling business. Also when I did a bunch of convoy security there was never a standard overall number because aside from the security crew you would have other people adding numbers that were just traveling from one area to another. Anyhow big thanks to him for joining up! I have less then two weeks left

That really pissed me off…jesus fucking christ give a dying man some dignity. Assholes.

i’m still glad we have the freedom of the press, but it was definitely in poor taste and twice as shady since the family requested it not to be posted. RIP
