Photos of the abandoned 1984 Olympic facilities in Sarajevo

Saw this on Fb and thought it was pretty cool considering we are watching the Olympics unfold. Very cool pictures!

In 1984, Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics. Just a decade later, the region was torn apart by a bitter years-long conflict, leading to widespread death and suffering. One not-so-familiar effect of this war was the toll it took on the Olympic infrastructure which had been built not that long ago. Today, these structures stand as a visual reminder of how quickly things can change.

This is the judges stand at the 1984 Olympic Ski Jump venue.

This is the crumbling medal podium…

The abandoned ski jump at Mount Igman stands overgrown.

The steps leading to the top of the ski-jump platform are nearly all gone…

This is the hotel where the 1984 Olympians stayed…

The bobsled track has been overgrown…

Graffiti covers the inside walls of the track…

While these photos offer a stunning glimpse of the decayed grounds from the 1984 Winter Olympics, it’s important to also remember how devastating the 1990s war was for the region. The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. The sports complex built for the 1984 Winter Olympics was utilized as a graveyard due to high casualties. The story of the 1984 Olympics doesn’t have the happiest ending, but it’s definitely a story worth knowing.

Legend man. Light sensitive zombies come out at dusk. Sochi will be like this in a month.

Looks like it was a great investment for them.

I love dark tourism like this. Eastern Europe is full of it. I’d love to see Chernobyl someday but haven’t found a taker to come with me.

I was trying to plan a trip as well until I found out they knocked down the woodpecker.

Sochi will have the same future. Sad that so many people were kicked out of their homes, which were bulldozed, and they received 0 compensation. That’s Russia for you though…

I made it to a few places my last time over there but yeah Chernobyl and Vukovar top my list… Got some great pics from an abandoned coastal military base in Northeastern Poland and assloads of stuff from communist era abandoned buildings all over Hungary and Croatia but still cant find the SD card… ill have to post those someday lol.

Love it.

Incredible to see something that happened when I was born, only to find it less than 30 years later in this condition…fascinating and wild, but sad too…

NYSpeed Eastern European adventure?? Since I can’t get anyone to go I was planning on London and Belgium as new spots, but would much rather climb all over old creepy radioactive shit

If you can wait till 2015 ill be doing London, Tomorrowland, and ill most likely end up in Eastern Europe as I always do… save the dates lol.

PM’d. Also FYI if anyone wants to go anywhere I’m always down for an adventure to places I’ve never been.

Highly popular coastal destination for eastern Europeans and Russians, which already has a tourism industry and a popular ski resort, which is now also going to be a Formula 1 venue with a 10 year contract will have the same fate as an Olympic venue used for a graveyard, execution site, and artillery positions (final turn on the bobsled track) in the longest siege in modern military history. What the fuck are you talking about?

Seems like yesterday, I remember purchasing Van Halen’s new album. Lol
