K well we all know the “take the ground off your battery” trick and all these other things, but looking at the alternator itself and JUST the alternator, what are signs that its kaput? When it’s out of the car and such.
Noises? Stuff like that.
Go!
i believe if it turns quite freely its going because the brushes are suppose to make some sort of ground?
lights flickering while idleing… that includes your gauges as well as headlights…
dipping in idle when you put on your lights… ( a very slight dip )
and the fact that its a 240 and everything goes at some point or another…LOL!
just get a volt meter and see whats going on…
might as well get it rebuilt if you suspect its going on you.
ohh shit… didint see that you wanted to know when its OUT of the car…
you can check the bearing by listening to it.
put the belt back on, start the engine and put a large screw driver up against the housing of the alternator. A long pry bar works too.
now put your ear against the handle of the tool and you may hear a odd humming noise which indicates a worn out bearing.
take it to ct. i have another one its all yours
