so what do you guys think of them this year since today is their season opener!?
im kind of excited to see how Tyler Palko is going to do as a starter. i graduated with him and played football with him all through high school. other than that their lack of an offensive line is going to be a tough obstacle to overcome!
I played against him and know his dad from refereeing, I hope he does great… I grew up with Luke and knew since his freshman year that if he didnt win the job, he was transferring.
Tyler is a hell of an athlete and a hell of a competitor… I think he’ll be able to “will” the team to some wins that they most likely would not have had with Rutherford or Getsy behind center…
TwoForty, remember playing West Mifflin at the last 3 rivers AAA championship game? I played for them… Never forget it, even though we lost
their best reciever is to slow, qb controversy again, no running game, no run stopping just like last year, harris is dickin over getsy with this transfer stuff… a bland season at best. :ugh2:
tyler does have a way of motivating people to play there best, thats one thing thats always made him a great leader. its also a reason we (west allegheny) were as good as we were. our practices were always good and our off season workouts were great.
ill never forget those games at three rivers and heinz field that i got to play in.
no offense 240 but your boy palko shouldn’t be QB this year. I talked to Steve Buches who plays TE for pitt and he said palko is the better athlete but getsy was the better QB and that he shoulda been startin. Harris treated getst like dirt cause palko was his prize recruit.
im not gonna defend him because i havent seen him really practice or play since high school. i dont think his few plays so far in college really say much about him. i also have seldom seen getsy play football period. my assumption would be that tyler is the more mobile QB from what ive read and since pitt’s line is going to be such a weakness his ability to scramble could be a big positive for the team :dunno: plus there are many intangables that i know tyler brings to the QB postition that most people dont have.
when i was still in HS my football team ran a “PITT” style offense. we based our practice on pitt’s practice style too. it was kinda ridiculous when a few of us went to a football camp down at pitt because every drill we did was identical. our passing tree was even numbered the same way and our plays were called in teh same format . my point being that tyler has been cultivated as pitt’s future QB by his dad (coach of WA) and coach harris so i can see favoritism playing a part in him starting QB for now.
but im heading down to the game tonight and i guess ill see first hand what he can do at the college level.
I know Luke personally, I played basketball with him for a long time and played midget football with him, but we stayed very close since we grew up in towns that border each other. I also know his dad well, Luke felt that he did just as well as Tyler did, but that Tyler got the benefit of the doubt becuase of his status as a 5 star recruit. The fact of the matter is, when they were both being recruited, Tyler accepted first, and Harris pulled Getsy’s offer… After some crying and complaining (and I’m pretty sure, some string-pulling) the offer was reinstated and he accepted. Luke knew what he was getting into coming to Pitt and knew he had an uphill battle to be the starter. I think Walt made the right choice (he rarely does that) but if I was Luke, I would have stuck around, with the way Tyler played last night, he would have SURELY seen some time.
As for Steve Buches, hes a hell of a pass catching TE, but where does he fit? Gill starts, and the coaches are really high on Darrell Strong and are doing everything they can to find a way to get him on the field. Maybe Buches can move to WR? I’ve heard he has the best hands on the team, but doesnt seem like much of a blocker.
We are in deep shit WR wise… Losing Terrell Allen for the year really hurts, Delsardo is a super nice kid (a guy i know very well is his uncle) but hes just not a D-1 reciever… We need one of the freshman WR’s to step up. Run blocking was ok, pass blocking was horrible…
And back to the WR thing, with Getsy behind center last night, we do even worse on offense, Tyler’s athletic ability got him otu of some jams, even if he did have a little bit of happy feet. But that 44 yard bootleg would never happen with Luke behind center.
We need some serious help in the WR corp. Bigtime.
well Penn State played up to their usual standards last night!
i know from watching tyler play for years that he was totally uncomfortable last night! his performence wasnt anything to brag about but the WR werent gettin any seperation. the o-line didnt do a very good job of protecting either! which made everything harder on tyler!
i thought teh defense played well but not d-1 well! OU’s QB wasnt exactly bad either! that kid was quick as fuck and you could tell he had his head in the game!
Cutty - Did you watch the game last night or are you judging from last years team? Kirkley had over 100 yards rushing! Thats not counting the garbage rushing yards they got from Palko (if you dont count his sacks, which count as negative yards rushing, he would have been somewher ei nthe 50 to 60 yard range), Tim Murphy and the mop-up yards from Marcus Furman… I’m the biggest Harris hater out there (I think Pitt should take a run at Steve Spurrier, but it would NEVER happen) but you can’t deny the fact that he was dedicated to the run last night, most likely because he had to b/c the passing game was horrendous.
i was gonna go last night but i didn’t. I am judging from last year but what other option does he have this year but to run. harris has been terrible with the run in the past. He gets stuck on a player and no one else matters. Remember nick goings? How could he have used nick goings all those times instead of barlow. just doesn’t make sense. Same thing with brandon williams, that kid got one shot his freshman year at RB and that was it.
