Hey guys… and gals. Hoping someone can help me out here. I have a 2006 pontiac g6.
So this weekend I was driving and my gauges all started going nuts. My gas light came on, power steering lights, etc. And the spedo changed from numbers, to the word ERROR. The car kept running fine, but when I parked it and tried to restart it, it wouldn’t start. The same error message appeared, and the car wouldn’t turn over or anything. I had it towed to the dealership and they said it started and they drove it off the flat bed.
I picked the car up yesterday and they told me everything was fine. They said they secured the battery better and cleaned the terminals and whatever. So… this morning, same thing! Error message appears and the car doesn’t start. I don’t really want to have it towed back to the same mechanics who accomplished nothing the first time. Any suggestions?
Here is a pic of the dash this morning when it wouldnt start.
Thanks JayS. I had it towed back to my place of purchase, Basil this morning. If they cannot fix it, for a second time, maybe I will try Don Davis. I checked the grounds and more visible wires and everything seemed ok. I’m not much more than a noob when it comes to mechanical stuff, so I will leave that up to someone else.
Do you have an aftermarket stereo? If so, do you have the Info-Center? Do you have the stock radio you could swap in to check and make sure it’s not an issue there?
my sis in law had intermittent starting issues with her G6. turned out to be the starter. but seeing that you got error messages(which she did not have) while driving, I have no other info for you. Alt issues?
I have an amp… but Its run through the stock radio. So I don’t think thats it. I disconnected the amp from the battery too, just in case that was causing the problem. No luck. When AAA came to tow it, they tested the alt and said it was good.
My battery died a few weeks back when it was super cold here in Buffalo. I replaced it with one from Autozone. Before the new battery, I never had a problem. I doubt thats the issue but I can’t really think of anything else…
-Bad/faulty Relay
-ECU
-Wiring issues
-Communication issue to other modules (Anti-theft/Passlock, other computer modules given that most everything is tied in on your car)
Unfortunatly intermittant electrical issues are tough to find, given that if it isn’t acting up at that moment it’s rather impossible to find.
my buddy had some starting issues and gauges not working it was his temp sensor which was weird. did u hook a scanner to it see if theres any codes or anything?
so the problem went away for about a week and a half. the shop found nothing to “repair” either time it was in.
so today when Im driving home the error message appears and the gauges go haywire. I stop at advanced auto and keep it running (because it won’t start if the message is up) and grab the scanner. It wouldn’t even connect. it would say fail or couldnt connect and ask try again.
temp sensor? thats interesting… because my temp in my info center has been off for about a year. like right now it reads -44F
In fear that the amp or speakers I put in were causing the probelms, I removed them yesterday. Car started right up… I drove to tops, where I was then stranded. Same issues… tach reads error and it won’t turn over. To top it off… now the radio won’t turn on. I checked the fuse… everything seems ok.
What do you need to do to get it working right once the short happens? Playing with the key? Doors? Shifter? Just wait it out? If you can isolate where the problem is it would be a huge help troubleshooting.
I would say work something out with the service department at the dealer so the next time it happens you can drive it straight there while it’s happening so they can troubleshoot it before it mysteriously fixes itself again.
I’m still saying charging system is on the fritz, meaning your new battery and/or alternator is giving you the trouble. It’s probably the alt since you already replaced the battery. It would explain why your dash is going haywire. When the voltage gets too low, digital electronics go :run:
I had an alternator die on my civic that would actually cause the battery to drain. Car would run fine if jumped, but would drain out the battery when shutdown. Took a while to find since it seemed like the alternator was charging the battery just fine.
He said AAA towing tested the alternator and it was fine. And I’d hope the dealer checked it too since they were doing things like cleaning battery terminals. Who know though since I’ve seen dealer techs fuck up an oil change. It takes 30 seconds to toss a volt meter on it running and not running so it’s worth checking.
The thing that bugs me is you said the battery ran down, you swapped it for an autozone one, and that’s when the problems started. Might be worth swapping the battery even though it’s testing out good.
