The reason why this car is called Schuppan Porsche is that a vehicle was built by Australian Porsche’s great works driver, Vern Schuppan. It is based on 962C which is the best Group C car and designed as a road going car.
Vern Porsche, he was not only Porsche’s works driver but took part of developing racing car as well. He won Le Mans 24 hours race in the overall class with Number 3 Romans colored 956 in 1983. In the same year, he participated in Endurance Championship which started in Japan and won the first champion.
Porsche debuted 956 to the public from May in 1982, so Schuppan suddenly reached his top career in Porsche. The honor and the most powerful machine gave him to establish “Team-Schuppan”. Able to start the race activities in Japan was the beginning of today’s Schuppan 962CR.
Three major exclusive models exist, which are 956, IMSA’s GTP regulations, and its total evolution model 962C.
Only the wheel base length (monocoque length) is different from each models and except that. It is exactly the same.Despite its intense world championship for the machine of “struggle for existence”, it was extraordinary racing car that was indulge over the strongest name for almost 10 years. Because of that, the car which is restored the engine, chassis and body, remodel by private collector exist and facts are very complicated. New variety of the story was born from here. We can say that Schuppan 962CR is one of this.
In late 80’s, Porsche announced that 962 was not supporting works team any longer. As soon as Enthusiastic Porsche user heard of it, they began protesting for 962 to be kept supporting. Porsche had been selling the car to enthusiastic private customers so they couldn’t give up supporting the works team.
Porsche still had a chance of success and they kept supporting works team such as supplying parts, engine and monocoque as well. As a result, Porsche helped the team (Joest-racing) as like factory-backed.Some of powerful team had not only modified the body parts but had begun to build original body by Porsche’s helping. Vern Schuppan, ex works driver of Porsche and had strong relationship with works team. There is no wonder that he was the one of person who was building new model at that time.
Porsche had announced to stop the activity in 1988 (later they revival in Joest-racing). Then Schuppan invented aluminum monocoque body same as works car in 89.
In 90, they produced consignment major CFRP (carbon fibered reinforced body) monocoque body to Advanced Composite Technology Corporation at that time. Those design plan was offered by Porsche.Eventually Schuppan’s idea of using CFRP 962 racing was never published. In active for many years in Japan, Schuppan had a various relationship and one ideal came up. At that time, Japan was in bubble economy and super car became popular.
By using carbon and aluminum monocoque which are developed for 962C, fitted racing engine made by Porsche and make road car that is original design. It was Japanese Art Sports that make this idea come true with Shuppan.
This new car was called Schuppan 962CR because of 962 C road car type. Price was about 200 million Japanese yen. Definitely, it was the most expensive super car at that time. There are some other super car which was taken over the design of race car such as Koenig and Dauer. However, 962CR design was completely different from those like using Porsche 959 style which is symbol of bubble economy same as F40. 962CR design used totally original full carbon body. Feature of racing car was kept only to canopy style cabin.
Hence you need to bend over your body like when you get in to racing car. To be designed as racing car, it mounted with two heteromorphic seats, interior was covered with leather and H pattern gear shift. View from driving seat, you can feel atmosphere of C car.
Engine is IMSA type 3.3L air cooled flat 6DOHC 24valve 600PS.This output is a number at the time of setting boost pressure 1.2 bars so true power spec of 962 CR and engine model was changed 2.65・ to 3.3・. Scale up is proper result from the view point of durable consideration. If considerate about the size of engine, it would be bigger than it is. Maximum speed is 370km/h.
Gearbox is all synchronous 5 speed manual made by Porsche. Suspension is front and rear double wish bone/coil. Variable stabilizer is attached to dumper unit, including pick up point and other layout are same as 962C. However, suspension geometry, spring rate and dumper are fitted as road type.
Tire and wheel are of course choose for road type. Front tire is 255/35ZR18 and rear is 345/ZR18. Wheel is 5 spark center locked big hexagon shaped spinner with original attaching tools.
Only 6 cars were manufactured and it is said that 3 cars were shipped to Japan.
“The most stand out Group C car driven in the town.”
