after thinking about it a little more i’m pretty sure it’s to prevent bullet setback in rounds that do not crimp the bullet. i know after you chamber a round a few times in a semi auto if it’s not crimped it may progressively seat the bullet further and further into the case.

i do a little shooting and reloading but more towards the hunting end of the spectrum. i reload not to save money but primarily for accuracy

That does make sense. I dont really care about the cost effectiveness more just the scarcity of ammo around here.
