Before I get my SOHC installed…what do you guys think I should change on the motor before I drop it in, such as clutch, water pump etc…Do you guys think i shoulda replace the chain?

are you refering to the timing chain?!!? IMO, it’s not worth the investment, it’s cheaper to pick up an engine with no rattle.

My suggestion is to clean up everything the best ypou can, maybe polish/ paint the valve cover, definately do a proper throttle body cleaning.

DRE

  • Clean the Throttle Body with Carb. Cleaner.
  • Clean the MAF Sensor with Carb. Cleaner.
  • Get a K&N Intake Filter.
  • Drain coolant, flush out with Prestone Coolant Flush, rinse out with water, remove the coolant reservoir tank and clean it out with CLR then rinse, replace and refill coolant with 60% Prestone Coolant/40% Distilled Water.
  • Drain oil, replace oil filter, replace oil. (I used a QuakerState filter and QuakerState 5w30)
  • Plug the AIV valve.
  • Take the battery terminals off and clean them out with some rolled up sandpaper, do the same to the poles on the battery then blow the shavings off and put the terminals back on.
  • Replace the PCV Valve ($5 at CT).
  • Once that’s all done, run some injector cleaner through the intake with the engine running and rev it up a few times.
  • Finally, get some Orange Citrus Degreaser spray from CT and clean the whole engine bay down.

That’s a good basic all-around tune up. It should cost you about $50 plus the filter and your engine will run infinitely better.

sounds good, i know these basics, just thought maybe there was sumthing typical that should be taken care of.

Depends on the condition, milage of the motor that you got… If over 200k I’d do the timing chain and gears, especially if I was planing on keepig it. But as someone pointed out it’s chaeper to get another motor from someone whos done a swap… probably where you got this one.

Of course it’s also a pain to keep pulling motors, or paying someone else to do it.

FWIW… it’s way easier to do timing chain with the motor out, and probably about 1/2 the price if you’re paying someone to do the work. If you are paying someone and considering doing the chain, ask them the difference in price between doing it now (motor out) or later… If you don’t ask… they’ll probbaly do it at book price eather way, if you ask then they’ll likely realize that you know it’s way easier with the motor out and quote you accordingly… or not.

Other things you might consider.

  • pulling the oil pan and checking the bearings. Only really worth doing if you’re prepared to do anythig if you ifnd they are showing signs of wear.
  • I’d clean up and paint the oil pan while I had it off too to stop it rusting out later
  • water pump. change it if you have the $ for preventative mait.
  • other stuff was alreday mentioned seemed to make sense, although I wouldn’t plug the AIV as you’ll probably need to pass emissions aain at some point.
