Timing Chain rattle? HELP pleas

I have constant timing chain rattle. What do you think is wrong? A broken tenser?

  • How much would it be to fix this and what parts would i need to do it my self usually?
  • If I did it my self how long would the job take me?
  • If I took it to Nissan would it cost a lot?

I got to get this fixed quick getting my car tuned on the 8th and I don’t want to be on the dino and my chain skips and then boom!!
Thanks for the help ppl.

timing chain kit from Nissan. It will take you the day. Nissan will prob charge 1000 bucks to do it. Not an easy job.

You have to drop the oil pan, take all pulleys off, and timing cover.

Big job, but you can do it yourself. Just set a day aside for it

On a lighter note, it may just be the upper guide rattling around. Pop your valve cover and check. If its lose, take it out.

Almost half a year later (5 months) and I haven’t touched her. She still makes the rattle, and I thank her everytime we make a trip hassle-free. My plan now is to wait it out. With the price of low km KA’s dropping, hopefully I can scrape up enough $ over the summer to swap in a newer KA (and dependent upon the amount, maybe a manual swapfingers crossed).

jjm_240sx, check the previous thread. Unless you’re very comfortable with your mechanical abilities, you’ll be looking at ~10-12 hours of labour at a shop

Were talking about the KA24DE here guys not the SOHC.

I think its a different problem but I lack to see exactly what is making the rattle.

Can someone please point it out to us…

I’m not talking about the SOHC. There is an upper guide on the DOHC. I told him to check that first.

I didn’t get a chance today to check it but i will over the week. I had to cancel my appointment to get my car tuned :(.
I will do a fallow up on what it is.
Thanks for the replies!

np at all man. That picture Adam posted, shows the upper guide I’m talking about. Its between the two cam sprockets.

Need anymore help, just shoot

Andrew.

CORRECTION:

If that guide is busted, make sure you replace it, because its there for a reason.

Andrew.

CT disscontiuned the valve cover gasket so now i got to get one form nissan what a waste of money.

Serious? retards

Just take off the cover and check to see what the prob is…you can use the old valve cover gasket till you get another. It may just leak a bit if its old.

You need to find out the problem. It may be the chain or a lower guide, in which case you’ll need to fix it anyway. Just pop her open and see.

FYI: Nissan issued a TSB regarding the upper timing chain guides for the KA24DE. Both the upper guide (horizontal piece between the cams) as well as the upper guide on the RH (slack side) were discontinued (read: you cannot buy them from Nissan anymore). Normally both of these guides are removed as part of any timing chain service. The only guide left in place on the upper chain is the tensioner.

Why are the guides there?
Originally the guides were designed to prevent the timing chain from flailing around IF there was a loss of oil pressure which prevents the tensioner from working. Think about it: if the engine loses oil pressure, alot worse things are going to happen than a timing chain skipping a tooth! :o

Why did Nissan discontinue them?
The guides are prone to breaking off and getting mangled in the timing chain. This is why they were discontinued. They aren’t required for proper operation of the motor and can cause more harm than good if left in place.

Valve cover gasket:
The KA valve cover gasket is designed to be reusable. Replacement isn;t required unless it is broken or has large cracks in it. Also, you do not need to use any sort of sealant between the valve cover & head.[/quote]

Thanks for info Philip! Good to know

so i leave it like in the second pictuer? and put the cover back on?

Well the noise is still there :frowning: i guess the whole thing needs to be done!! do you think the engin will beable to take boost with the chain like that?

thanks.

I’d fix it man. You don’t want your pistons hitting your valves.
Are all the other guides ok?

Andrew.

The rattle could be the result of a loose heat shield on the exhaust. i can’t remember in detail, but when I got my car It rattled really bad at 1500 rpm, I thought it was somethign in the engine, but apparently it was a loose heat shirld around the CAT, i had it remouved and went rttle free untill the track… now it’s the timing.

Just an idea, sometimes things arten’t as bad as tehy seem

Good luck

DRE

no its the timing chain. i used a steth-a-scope but i dont really care its to much work. i will probly do it in the summer.
thanks for all the help guyz!

Justin are you still going to get tuning then?

I talked to him, and he said he was anyway.

Yes i am going to get it tuned. Going to go with greddy emanage though. this way if the engin goes i can use it for anoter car or engin or sell it unlike the tecktom i would have to get it all redone again.
