I have constant timing chain rattle. What do you think is wrong? A broken tenser?
How much would it be to fix this and what parts would i need to do it my self usually?
If I did it my self how long would the job take me?
If I took it to Nissan would it cost a lot?
I got to get this fixed quick getting my car tuned on the 8th and I don’t want to be on the dino and my chain skips and then boom!!
Thanks for the help ppl.
Almost half a year later (5 months) and I haven’t touched her. She still makes the rattle, and I thank her everytime we make a trip hassle-free. My plan now is to wait it out. With the price of low km KA’s dropping, hopefully I can scrape up enough $ over the summer to swap in a newer KA (and dependent upon the amount, maybe a manual swapfingers crossed).
jjm_240sx, check the previous thread. Unless you’re very comfortable with your mechanical abilities, you’ll be looking at ~10-12 hours of labour at a shop
I didn’t get a chance today to check it but i will over the week. I had to cancel my appointment to get my car tuned :(.
I will do a fallow up on what it is.
Thanks for the replies!
Just take off the cover and check to see what the prob is…you can use the old valve cover gasket till you get another. It may just leak a bit if its old.
You need to find out the problem. It may be the chain or a lower guide, in which case you’ll need to fix it anyway. Just pop her open and see.
FYI: Nissan issued a TSB regarding the upper timing chain guides for the KA24DE. Both the upper guide (horizontal piece between the cams) as well as the upper guide on the RH (slack side) were discontinued (read: you cannot buy them from Nissan anymore). Normally both of these guides are removed as part of any timing chain service. The only guide left in place on the upper chain is the tensioner.
Why are the guides there?
Originally the guides were designed to prevent the timing chain from flailing around IF there was a loss of oil pressure which prevents the tensioner from working. Think about it: if the engine loses oil pressure, alot worse things are going to happen than a timing chain skipping a tooth! :o
Why did Nissan discontinue them?
The guides are prone to breaking off and getting mangled in the timing chain. This is why they were discontinued. They aren’t required for proper operation of the motor and can cause more harm than good if left in place.
Valve cover gasket:
The KA valve cover gasket is designed to be reusable. Replacement isn;t required unless it is broken or has large cracks in it. Also, you do not need to use any sort of sealant between the valve cover & head.[/quote]
The rattle could be the result of a loose heat shield on the exhaust. i can’t remember in detail, but when I got my car It rattled really bad at 1500 rpm, I thought it was somethign in the engine, but apparently it was a loose heat shirld around the CAT, i had it remouved and went rttle free untill the track… now it’s the timing.
Just an idea, sometimes things arten’t as bad as tehy seem
no its the timing chain. i used a steth-a-scope but i dont really care its to much work. i will probly do it in the summer.
thanks for all the help guyz!
Yes i am going to get it tuned. Going to go with greddy emanage though. this way if the engin goes i can use it for anoter car or engin or sell it unlike the tecktom i would have to get it all redone again.
