I can do this for the soch too right? And my next question is, if my timing chain is still bad, where do I get the parts to fix it? And what parts do i need?
Holy s**t!!! I was going to remove it tonight, but decided to check up on the forums first. Thanx for the info!!! That could have been pretty bad. Neway, so what do i need for the SOHC timing chain fix? I would like to do it this weekend. Yes I am going to do it myself. (with a friend) Yes I am not 100% sure what I am doing. And Yes I am willing to spend many many many hours to save 400 bucks. I will check all the forums again, but I dont think there was specific info for the SOHC. Neway, help would be appreciated! Thanx!
Yes, the distributor has to be repositioned correctly or you will completely mess up the ignition timing. .[/quote]
Pulling and reinstalling your ‘dizzy’ is a simple task provided you note the position of the rotor. An easy way to ensure alignment upon reinstall is to mark the position of the rotor on a.) the dizzy housing and, b.) on a nearby surface (firewall, inner fender etc).
The majority of problems incurred when reinstalling are related to the dizzy being 180 degrees out. So as long as you take a few seconds to mark the positioning, Robert’s your father’s brother!
Forgive me for bringing this topic back up but can anyone describe exactly what timing chain rattle kinda sounds like??? (yeah I know it’s not gonna be easy) and also if I have timing chain rattle in my engine will the noise be there as soon as I start my car??
It will be noticeable, as you’ll hear a ‘ticking’ noise coming from the very front of your engine (where the timing chain resides). You’ll hear it on start-up because there’s less oil around in there (its settled), and possibily at higher rpm’s. I’ve been constantly reminded of mine for two years now
Okay, what problems will incur if I leave the rattle alone??? I don’t have the money at the time to replace the parts so that also means no new engine or SR. I’m kinda afraid to drive my car now.
Okay more news about my rattle… it only seems to rattle a couple minutes after I start it up. Everything seems okay for the first couple minutes and then tick…tick…tick…tick…
Ditto.
Just take it easy on her (no high revs, give her time to warm up), make sure you change your oil often, and thank your lucky stars everytime you make a trip successfully . Mines been evident for about two years now, I take everyday one at a time, and hope to ride it out until I do have the money for a replacement engine.
Well I know this is not the buy and sell forum, but I do have the timing chain kit for the SOHC. I dont know if anyone is interested in it, but I am selling it for really cheap. I will sell it for exactly what I got it $140. You will not find a better deal than this anywhere guarenteed. This is cost price, and no tax etc. etc.
Then with the help of some of the guys on the forums, I am sure you could replace it yourself in a weekend. Anyway, if anyone is intested, or scared of thier SOHC blowing up, let me know and I will sell you the kit.
Riding it out for 2 years?! Wow man, you have been lucky. If the guide breaks your totally finished. Good luck and dont push your engine. heh heh…
That’s not a bad price for the SOHC kit. The DOHC is considerably more money though . Not to mention installation is more time consuming . Oh well, if you see a guy driving a 240 with his fingers crossed at the wheel, that would be me .
I wonder if the DOHC timing chain kit is something we could do on a group buy??? I’d be willing to offer my garage for the weekend to anyone in need (of course this is dependant on whether they accept our offer on the house)
Well, I guess its time to bring this thread back alive again.
I have a the 1990 SOHC and have had the rattle on start up since I got my car about 8 months ago. Just recently in the last day or two, I have notice the rattle stoping, and then starting back up but not as intense as the sound at start up.
Anyway… I figured I better look around for prices for a replaceement chain kit and install.
Alta Nissan (Richmond Hill) - 13-14 hrs @ $85/hr + parts
Strong Automotive (Willowdale/Sheppard) - $1200
and the list goes on.
Im waiting to hear back from my shop tomorrow and well see what he tells me.
I was also thinking of running outside and removing the top guide, but I kept reading and decided that I shouldnt lol
Anyway… if you guys have any thoughts or suggestions Id be appreciative to hear them.
In my 95 DOHC there is a rattle that I can hear at idle. I am going to take a look and see if removing the top peice helps at all if not I guess I will have to start saving to get it done. I would do it myself but that is somthing that I would really rather not have on my shoulders.
