keep driving my car with timeing chain rattle what happens?

Well i have the rattle in there from the chain…what will happen if i keep driving with the loud noise will the plastic guides just break off and fall in the oil pan? or will it totally mess up…anyone know?

engine is 91 KA24DE

i’ve been drivin like that for a while. Nothing has happened yet. Its been since like april or so. Im not to worried about it.

The rattle is the chain hitting the front cover.

Where it hits on the front cover(atleast on a sohc) is the back side of a coolant passage.

What will happen if not fixed is it will wear through and you will have all you coolant in your oil and well you get what happens next.

I had that on my single… On the DOHC though it doesn’t wreck shit. Change it if the car feels crappy from it, otherwise its just annoying to listen to.

I have DOHC and its just been getting worse and louder…thats why im getting worred about it…im pretty sure i have a new engine coming but i mean i want to use this one up i jsut dont wantto have to tow the car if if breaks down somewhere becasue of this.

It sounds like a tin can filled with teeth rattleing right now lol

well, the timing chain guides do break

I see so ill lose all accel …this is why i dont take my car out of town anymore…i guess all i can do is wait for it to break and then install my new engine…

why wait for it to break? Just put new guides in it and your good to go

its not that hard to do yourself and the parts are cheap

i wonder how long it will last for like this i guess there is no real way to gauge it i know there is a guide on the top of the engine looks easy to take off

I got the job quoted at Nissan it was 1700$ they wanted…another shop wanted 775+ labour the job is about 10 hours labour at nissan…at this rate its cheaper to get a new engine intalled correct? and to chage the guides myself arent there 3 guides one on the top and 2 on thew bottom …to get ot the bottom would you not have to take apart the whole front of the engine…i dont really have the area for doing this type of thing my driveway is on a wierd ass hill sucks for working on cars, and i dont have that much experince to be confident enough to attempt taking all this sutff off i dont think…

it only takes about 4 hours if your learning to do it the first time and a lot quicker if you know what your doing. Dealerships are bullshit and shops just rape people

I know how to remove the 2 guides on top (basically that’s all you have to do). There’s no need to replace all the chain guides, sprokets and so on…

My only problem is, I don’t have a place to do it, and I don’t have a 28mm socket for the crankshaft pulley so I can rotate it and set the 1st cylinder on the compression cycle.

Otherwise, doing everything is pretty straight forward.

One other suggestion in case you havn’t thought of it yet.
Check your oil level, if it’s low it could be causing the noise to get louder.

yup, its time to change my engine oil when that thing starts getting louder.
