You guys following Andy Ngo’s twitter and see the shit going down in Portland still?

oooh, another Insurrection.

I mean, accidental combustion.

So most teachers are fluffy and full of BS, not going to lie.

So today we found out that part of the Biden push for “normalization of schools” plan is to bring back standardized testing.

I can’t tell you how many teachers who voted for Biden have been mother-fucking him all week long. It’s almost…like I saw this coming.

I just LOL and smile.

I support standardized testing. I don’t like how its done, but think its almost mandatory.
Former teacher friends very strongly disagreed with me.

Although, if its Biden… I can be convinced how shitty it is.

Can you guys define standardized testing versus the alternatives?
AP exams, SATs, Regents exams, I’m assuming those are standardized?

I think the biggest problem is adding more standardized tests to the school year that are created by people that are too far removed from working in the real world or teaching in the real world.

My experience with AP exams is that there is a good amount of arbitrary grading. My daughter killed herself on prep last year for a world history or something, only to be graded on a written portion that was done online and in no way proctored. I believe the non-covid format is multiple choice and essay. oh. and its only graded 0-5 points.

Secretly I know there is no value to AP classes aside from helping work ethic and being able to commiserate with friends with more give-a-shitivity about education. (see note that your network determines your future)

there should probably be a whole separate thread on covid kids and teaching. I listened to some podcast series at 2x, so I’m now ready to debate

I supported standardized testing as well, until I saw the inequity of education across the area, it’s pretty horrible when you take a group of low income, predominantly minority, students and compare them against a bunch of rich white kids who parent’s paid for tutors and what not.

SATs and all that stuff are great for entrance data for college, military, etc. But when you see standardized testing in the news, it’s really talking about (for example) the NYS Regents exams. That’s our state standardized testing here.

I’m special in that I don’t have a dog in the fight being an engineering teacher, we don’t have end of year standardized exams, yet. I do see the benefits of it, but I see the negatives too. But as I’ve said before, teachers for the most part are just a cog in a broken machine.

I don’t support standardized tests for grading teachers, but I do support standardized tests. Every night my wife and I hammer it into our kid that school is important and her priority and that’s the norm in Williamsville. It’s definitely not fair to grade her teacher on the same scale as some shit neighborhood where at best the parents aren’t involved and at worst they’re actively supporting the view that working hard in school is a bad thing.

You need a standardized test though to show colleges that your kid HAS busted their ass and put in the work. You need standardized tests so parents thinking about moving can look at the scores for a school and get a realistic idea of what kind of peers their children are going to have if they go to that district. When we bought our house Williamsville and Clarence were the only districts we were looking at because of schools. Who knew at the time Williamsville would fail so spectacularly and publicly with a pandemic, but it’s looking more and more like that will be a 1 to 1 1/4 year blip in an otherwise stellar education system.

I’ll weigh in here just to say that I’d give standardized testing more support if the test themselves were realistic. Why give an exam that curves a 35% to a 65% passing grade (I’m looking at you, Algebra 1)? Why not give a fair enough exam that assesses performance without the need for a curve? The need to level the playing field defeats the purpose then IMO.
