I’m having a problem with my cars power steering the steering gets stiff when i turn it, sometimes it will turn smoothe but then it will catch at certain points and be really hard to turn. I thought it could be the power steering pump but it still does it when the car is off.
any idea what this could be? a problem with the steering rack? or a bad pump / something binding?

yes it does , which is why i was thinking it must be the rack.
Did you check you’re fluid level? Sounds like it dried up and the gears are skipping teeth or something of that sort.
fluid is full , it also does it with the car in the air
check steering column endlink, the bit that connects ur steering column to the rack, it might be stiff. if so would need replacing.
