Weird Power Steering Issue

To start off, the fluid level is fine

OK so I have no idea how to explain this properly but I’ll give it my best shot.

Basically, the power steering on my coupe beater is acting weird. It’s been doing this for quite a while now.

I don’t believe there are any leaks.

I’m not 100% certain of the circumstances that this will happen, but I can re-produce the issue everytime by doing the following:

When I’m turning, if I’m just cruising or not accelerating with much throttle it feels generally fine but if I give it a decent amount of gas and accelerate through the corner everything stiffens up really tight… to the point where if I don’t let off the gas the wheel will stay turned indefinitely until I either force it back myself or if I let off the gas.

basically it seems like if the motor is under load (or perhaps the ps is under load for the cornering?) the power steering is dead, or maybe not completely dead but at least acting up in some way… like I said its hard to explain.

I thought maybe someone would have some insight?

:frowning:

Very weird, the only thing I can think of off hand is to check the belt tensioner, maybe when its at idle or low rpms its just tight enough to grab but higher rpms it slips?? Might be worth to check out, I really dont know otherwise, maybe somthing interanally with the pump?

Good luck

Could be whatever bearing is holding pulley on the pump. I’m pretty sure I have the same problem as you, The symptoms feel generally the same.

If the car is idleing and you turn the wheel, do you get any squeeking from the belt?

try using White greese on all your linkages and checking your bushings on your steering rack…
dont ask just do…

dan, belt doesnt squeek.

thanks for the suggetions guys

check the ps rack.

also check and make sure no lines are pinched, hardlines and the one line that is at the back of the rack it almost looks like a mishaped M you gotto get under your car to look at it tho
my friend had pinched his putting a motor in and every now and again it would stiffen up …
