I really don’t keep up with all of this new technology for gaming and such, but I just bought all the pieces for a new pc. I spent about 2 weeks just trying to figure out what all the new shit is. SLI, Core 2 Duo, Crossfire, etc… I never heard of any of this shit, and I work in the field.
I finally got all the parts and will assemble it on friday, hopefully.
The only thing I haven’t got a lot of info on yet is thermal paste. Does it actually matter what kind you use or will anything pretty much work well?
btw - I got a core 2 duo e6400 processor, msi p965 platinum mobo, corsair 1gb ddr2 533mhz memory, seagate 160gb sata2 HD, geforce 7600gt 256mb video card, coolermaster case w/500w PS, and a lite-on dual layer dvd burner. I thought it was going to be more expensive, it was only about $700 for all of it.
You wont need thermal paste if you got the heatsink with the processor. They come with it already applied to the heatsink. The key is applying it correctly. If you got a bigger heatsink or are water cooling it you will need some paste, it will most likely come with either of them though. It kind of like doing head gaskets. it has to be done right.
type doesnt matter, dont need more then a few drops and to apply it with a CC, it only has to act as a filler between the processor and heatsink metal so its flush.
Ask whitey about the box he had fiddle with a month ago, looked like someone blew a load on the processor lol.
I did get the retail processor so the heatsink and fan came with it. I haven’t looked at it yet though.
and I did look at a dell and all the other ones like hp, gateway, etc… and came to the conclision after about 10 minutes that they all suck balls. To get a nice one you need to spend at least $1K and even then it’s not that nice.
neato… i’ve been looking for something to buy for ever… i’ts just not worth building your own anymore with regards to RAM and disk space, but otherwise it’s better than buying from dell / gateway… if you don’t need a monitor it’s def worth building your own… i’ve found that for every computer i build, there is one commercial one with some more ram or 50 more gb of hd space… but in the end :gives: built > bought
The manufacturer ones all have something wrong with them. If they have a 250gb hd and new processor, then the video card is complete shit. If they have a decent vid card and hd, then the processor is a cheap ass POS amd. And the ones that have everything(hp media center pc’s) are all at least 1000-1500 for a nice one. My new one isn’t great, but it’s better than the manufacturer ones and it was only ~$700 total. I really don’t need a huge HD, printer, monitor, keyboard, mouse so buying one didn’t make sense.
that looks like a pretty damn good deal. i just built one a few months ago…
Athlon64 3500+ 512 mb PC3200 DDR RAM, etc for around $270 after rebates.
if the heatsink already has the cooling tape on the heatsink you don’t need it, but if it’s bare metal, apply the paste about the size of a small pea on the processor core itself then spread with either a credit card or razor blade, i prefer razor blade, just dont score the processor core.
You should know about head gaskets with that super coupe… I had one but sold it before they were about to go out.
what hardware? we have some test systems… quad cores on 2gb fsb with solid state memory… nothing beats the 16way clusters… 16 dual cores with 256gb(512 mirrored) of ram baller.
