Question for Deck Hockey guys...

I finally got into a league and played my first game tonite. Had alot of fun, but god knows I need to get better… It’s at the place out in bridgeville, a little bit of a hole in the wall but who cares were just playing for fun. A couple of questions for anyone that plays (I know Chad does…)

  1. Tips for skating backwards? I can coast backwards, but once i slow down im fucked. I almost got toasted a couple times and it sucks having to look over your shoulder the whole time.

  2. I know i need a softer wheel. I felt like I was slipping on the rubber flooring they have here. (Apparently they hav rubber and wood floors, I was unaware of this.) Anybody have recommondations for wheel type (Labeda, Rink Rat, etc…), a durometer (I’m running all-around 78a’s now) and a bearing (I have ABEC 3’s, regulars not micros).

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

Wait deck hockey? Or Roller Hockey?

Deck Hocky is usually played on foot…

yah the softer the better it depends on where your playing at. Usually I would use 74a 78a is pretty hard. 78a is more likely used for a soft street hockey skate. and the whole skating backwards thing sorry I dont know what to tell you heh…

Since I’m asking about skates and wheels, I’ll let the Einsteins of the board figure out if I’m playing on Foot or not.

Ok well let me clue you in smartass.

some DECK hockey rinks use a rubber floor that is primarily used for foot, BUT they are also able to be skated on. Roller Hockey is usually played on a wood floor. So your wheel composition makes a fucking difference.

I was trying to be helpful, but you know all…

So why dont you just ask right off the bat if its a wood floor or rubber? But no, you have to define deck and roller hockey for me. Thank you very much Senor Dictionary, now, back to the topic since this is ON TOPIC forum.

Practice man. I can fly on blades forward, and backwards. Time skating is the only thing that will make you a better skater.

ABEC 3’s should do you good for now.

I dont know your work schedule, but Im down for meeting up at RMU’s rink for some stick time. Say 2ish on a weekday?

Rink rat hot shots. abec 7 bearings at least. hit me up on AIM tomorrow. we’ll talk

you dont need anything better than abec 3’s. abec 7’s wont help now.
skating backwards you just need to pretend to do figure 8’s almost. just practice.

whats the basic equipment u all use?i wanna get some but i dont wanna go over board on it.i know the basic

1 gloves
2 helmet
3 knee/shinpads
4 elbow.forearm pads
5 stick
6 cup (lol)

anything else?

C cuts :bigthumb:

Tray… that is about right. i bought a set of hip pads too

indeed

as far as skating back wards…u kinda gotta press forward and let your leg go outwards then bring it back, in a circle motion (c-cuts…as chad was sayin). first practice with momentum built up to get the motion down, then once u get that u can pretty much do it at will, after some practice.

no. 3’s arent nearly as smooth and require more effort/skill to get them moving good.

un-noticiable for the average person.

i think on deck/sport court it is definatly noticable. the smoothness really takes effect on a surface like that. i dont think its gonna be night / day to the average person but itll def help.

The difference in price between 3’s and 7’s is like 5 or 6 bucks for a set of 16… $6 wont kill me so ill step up to the 7’s and try em out.

Thanks for the advice guys, keep it coming if you’d like.

Ko sports in cannonsburg has a bargain bin for like $2-$4 a wheel. there are some good wheels in there if you dont mind mixing and matching a little

ya that place is cool. right now they r in the process of lettering/ numbering me the sweetest hockey jersey of all time :bigthumb:

bargain bin wheels are the best got mine out of there and have had em for 3 years

would you guys suggest going to a 74a hardness for a sportdec (like a rubber tile) floor for more traction? I was on a couple of sites that said I should go to a x-soft wheel (the 74’s) since I’m only 165-170lbs…

Any thoughts?
