My advice:
Don’t listen to anyone on here, or your focus forum, or church, and go talk to a Ford Tech. Ask them directly, maybe something in writing.

Great advice go talk to a Ford Tech, because they build high performance engines everyday. 99% of the new engines installed at dealerships are crate engines right from the manufacture.
Honing a block has nothing to do with being high performance, if you replace with stock slugs and rings… do you hone? Who better to ask?
How many Zetecs have you changed the internals on? None? 10? If the answer > 0 then your “opinion” might mean something. If your answer = 0, then your opinion is worse than mine.
At least he has a chance of someone @ Ford knowing what the fuck is in the cylinder walls, and if honing is necessary. Basing opinions on the past, or different motors is silly, unsafe, and expensive. My comment wasn’t directed at you particularly, everyone in this thread expressed an opinion, not 1 was pertaining to the engine in question. If it was a SBC, I might have to ask you, but this is a baby Ford motor, with “newer” technology.
a dealership should know how to prep a cylinder wall when installing a new piston
car companies sometimes do request that the dealer only replaces one piston / rod on a motor that only has one dead cylinder where ther isnt damage to the crank / cylinder wall
:word:
But what would ford know about Foci?
I would NEVER go to a chevy tech and ask for high performance advice. You might find a guy that ALSO works on his car and therefore would give you their opinion on what to do. Otherwise that have no clue what a high performance motor needs. They order crate motors if they need to install a new motor.
Not listen to people on here? Needless comment and starting unnecessary drama.
Building a bottom end should is no place to skimp. Budget parts make budget power. Proper machine work is a necessity. New bearings, and rings are a necessity. Basically if you don’t have the budget to do it right, wait until you do.
You guys are taking this to heart, instead of your ears.
Honing a block is not a high performance modification. Honing is something that “regular” maintenance would include… if a car throws a rod, or a ring, or cracks a piston, the dealership is not going to replace the shortblock. THEY WOULD KNOW WHETHER OR NOT TO HONE THE BLOCK. THAT IS ALL I’M SAYING.
LOL… are we talking about the same dealerships that solder radiators? The ones that twist wires together with electrical tape? The ones that probably dont even OWN a torque wrench, let alone know how to use it? Those same dealerships that fix everything with a hammer…? That wouldnt tell you if they broke something in your car (as long as you wont see it…or maybe will). The ones that say “What Noise?” and “Thats Normal”…?
Those dealerships?
I wouldnt ask them how to replace a radio volume knob let alone anything about internal engine work.
Not an attack on you Jack, I just couldnt resist poking fun at dealerships!
Anyone who has hung around dealerships long enough knows everything I am saying is true.
And I have to agree with JNJ… and thats just fucking scary. Go with the Ring manufacturers recomendation on wall prep, line hone your block, change your bearings, and for Gods sake, balance the fucking crank.
t-if, not my motor, not my money… but it’s not JnJ’s money either if it gets fbuar’d.
i just knew the crank is balanced from the factory and wasnt sure if it needed to be re-balanced or not with new pistons/rods, which now i know that it does need to be balanced with the whole rotating assembly.
^^ Just so you know, I didn’t mean for your thread to go this way, but I, much like everyone else in this thread, was just trying to help. Unfortunately, I, much like everyone else in this thread, have never rebuilt a Zetec.
why in the world would u not wanna ask a tech, whose been through courses and training for a specific manufacturer’s products what to do? the things people say on here are sometimes just plain retarded.
No… no, no. Not a good idea. Ford Techs don’t know about Zetecs. I know they are called stealerships for a reason, but when it boils down to it, there are 2 or 3 people in WNY who work for FORD that have the correct answer.
i dont get it, its not a difficult awnser. theres gotta be a master tech at the ford shops that know a thing or two about it. It seems like a really simple question i cant imagine that you cant find someone at Ford that can awnser ur question.
Yes the crank is balanced at the factory, every engine is weather it be internal or external balance. However they are usually not balanced to precise tolerance like a performance engine, which means they will be fine for lower RPMs but might be some nasty harmonics/vibrations at high RPMs. If you invested money in good parts spend the extra $200 for a good internal balance of the rotating assembly.
i worked at schmitts garage for 5 years
never once did they solder a radiator
the only time wires were twisted together were for testing, after the problem was located and solved the wires were soldered and shrink rapped, or in some cases butt-connectored and shrink wrapped
each of the service techs had their own Tq wrench, the tool room had a tq wrench, and 2 of the 5 collision techs had one of their own also
anything that was accidentaly broken by us was fixed one way or another. if it was glueable, we did so, if we had to order a new one we did, if it was an older car and we had a trade in or used car on the lot with teh same part, a trade was made
if you expect a dealership to go around telling people that some simple part was accidentaly broken and they replaced it, thats retarded. idiots who know nothing about cars will try to sue you for their wiring problems after you told them you replaced their battery cover because to them the words “battery cover” means you broke something thats electronic
the general public is car retarded, seriously, if i had a dollar for every time some customer tried to make some wild corelation between broken parts and unrelated items, id be fuckin rich
stuff like “you replaced my bumper and now my radio doesnt work” or “after my airbag went off my sunroof stopped working”
and then on top of that, people start blaming the dealership for problems caused by their own stupidity … like the guy who drove his a4 20 damn miles on a wadded up front suspension and his shredded rim shoved against the fire wall, and he was pissed at US because his carpet smelled burnt for 2 months
dude ! your tire POLISHED the firwall and cooked all the paint off the inside of the firewall, call your ins co and convince them to let us pull your dash and repaint everything, otherwise GTFO
Wow… Good for Schmitts. I wasnt talking about them… So…?
Trust me, I spend enough time in (new car) dealerships that I have been jokingly offered Jobs cause I am at various ones so much. They are not peachy, Sorry to burst your bubble. There are a few good techs, and a whole lot of hack artists.
I have seen enough that I would NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER allow ANY dealership or shop to touch my car unsupervised. (or at all for that matter, I avoid it like the plague… I would rather shell out $$ and buy parts even if under warranty just to not have them touch my car- and those are the GOOD techs!) The name of the game today is Dollar Billz Yo, and when someone is riding your ass like the Service Managers and others do, you WILL cut corners. Not to mention, if these techs are so highly trained by the factory, why do I get calls ALL THE TIME from some dealers asking how to solve problems or I have heard of this, that and the other thing? I have talked to some of the best dealer Viper techs in the USA, and they STILL dont hear about anything before I do.
Some of you may work at dealerships and think I am attacking you. If you’re a hack artist- yeah, you suck. If not, Its your friends- blame them!
LOL…like when you look in a manual and check the piston weight… 455-465 grams, WHAT THE FUCK? Do they not own scales at Mahle?
